The Man in the High Castle: Creating the Alt World

Finest Movie/TV Tie-In Book I Have Ever Seen
If you are a fan of "The Man in the High Castle" this is simply a must have for your collection. Simple as that. Fans were left wanting more after four seasons, and Mike Avila delivered. My jaw literally dropped open when I looked inside. The sheer amount of material, attention to detail, photos, descriptions -- everything is laid out systematically from the Japanese Pacific States, through the Neutral Zone and on in to the Greater Nazi Reich. He doesn't leave out even the smallest detail or character from set and production design to conceptual art, location information, costumes and more. This is something to treasure or to gift to that High Castle fan in your life. I wish I could give this ten stars. Exceptional book in every way. Bravo, Mike Avila, Bravo.

A nice memento of a great series
I really enjoyed the show when it streamed and felt the production designers had done a great job creating the 'alt-worlds' so this book was an enjoyable memento. However, like many reviewers, I'm puzzled by the decision to expunge the swastika imagery from every photograph after they had featured throughout the TV show. I feel like this detracted from the achievements of the show's Art Department.I'm glad i waited until the price had dropped to around 25 dollars as I think this was a more realistic price for this book!

Must have for any High Castle fans!
If you are a fan of the Amazon Prime series The Man in the High Castle, then this book is a must have. It has plenty of great bts photos and interviews with the cast and crew that provide wonderful insight into the making of High Castle. It was just the book I was hoping it would be.

This should be 5 stars, easily but it's not
I love books about the concept art and detailed props depicted in films, particularly science fiction and fantasy.I also appreciated very much both the book and the Amazon series of "The Man in the High Castle." The set decoration and world building were so intricately constructed I re-watched and paused the video so I could get a sense of the backgrounds, the costumes, the props, and the details that went into the amazing show.So it was natural that I would be strongly interested the subject matter. But it's impossible to depict a Nazi-dominated world without showing Nazi imagery. I get that the swastika is viscerally jarring, and is best not highlighted on the cover. But how on earth do you show costumes, book covers, kitsch, and other materials from the (thankfully fictional) American Reich totally devoid of disturbing symbols? The ENTIRE SHOW was disturbing. The suspension of disbelief that TMITHC was so good at was absolutely wrecked by this. And this censorship is counter to the entire point of the show in the first place. I am so impressed by the design and attention to detail that was invested in this program. This book, not so much.

A truly wonderful book for a mesmerizing show. The art is fantastic, and the detail is amazing. The pictures of the cast and crew is crisp and lively.

"concept art & final designs"
What a disappointment. I notice that the Amazon ‘diktat’ (destroying all imagery/props having a swastika) appears to be evident in the photographic illustration the book. I noted on page 93 a shot of Hawthorne sitting for his propaganda shot ~ filming his Twilight Zone type thing about High Castle ~ wearing an armband that’s sans the swastika (just a blue circle) Then I went back to the first pages of the book I note there’s imagery of the Statue of Liberty wearing a simple red sash (no swastika) and the tall building in the background having a hanging red ‘banner’ again, sans the swastika that was a prime image in the series. A cursory page turning quickly through the book ~ Times Square imagery (page 122) has a red banner sans the swastika, SS HQs imagery has the same red banner outside the building sans swastika, pages 126, 127, 129 all showing ‘American nazis' with armbands having blue/black circles where the white & swastikas should be and all awards (which gave this series interesting historical 'detail') edited to remove the details. It reminds me of Stalin era edited photos where Stalin's enemies are edited out of historical photos to advance the propaganda. This is pitched as featuring "concept art" and "final designs" but is, in fact, a censored, politically correct, sanatized piece of self-aggrandizing puff-piece. I shouldn't have wasted the money.

Eindeutige Empfehlung
