Q: My main dslr is one with a 'built in battery grip' so it's taller than most. what's the 'height' (thinking sideways ;) of the camera compartment?

It fits my Nikon D7200 with battery grip while fitted with 70-200 LENS

Q: does it fit a 17" laptop and dslr kit....?

15.6 and very snug. I have a MSi and I got this bag. 17 would be too large of a pc for the space provided. I barely had enough room to slip my pc in the back.

Q: How do you secure this bag as you cannot add padlocks? I've just bought the bag, it's great but zip-pulls are rubber with no hole for padlock???

I guess one can’t secure it.... I just never leave it out of my sight, when using it. I had a previous ‘lockable’ camera bag... and the whole bag was stolen.

Q: Would this bag be big enough for a Canon 7D

It should be big enough for the 7D & lenses. I fit a Canon 100D with lens plus a canon powershot 50HSX and 2 additional lenses in the camera compartment of mine. The only drawback I find is that it is fiddly to place/attach the internal dividers properly as the bag opens at the front and the side.
