The Jack Richeson Butcher Tray Palette is a versatile 7 x 11 inch porcelain on steel palette designed for artists who demand quality and functionality. Its smooth surface allows for easy mixing of watercolors and gouache, while the innovative bowed bottom design ensures that excess water flows to the edges for a cleaner workspace. Although some palettes may arrive with minor chips, this does not compromise their usability, making them a reliable choice for both amateur and professional artists.

A professional illustrator's go-to palette.
I'm a professional freelance illustrator, mainly illustrating children's books with watercolor. High-quality tools at a bargain price are extremely important to me, and this palette fits the bill!It really comes down to personal preference, but I hate plastic palettes and have found that porcelain palettes are my favorite. However, porcelain is pricey and heavy. An enamel butcher tray palette is the best of both worlds: lightweight, easy to use and clean, and more affordable. Previously, I ordered a larger butcher tray palette from another company, and not only is it a little too bulky, the enamel tends to chip off easier. Chipping enamel is going to happen--it's just the nature of the beast--but the Jack Richeson butcher tray palette is holding up better. There is a chip on the rim, but so far it hasn't spread or rusted in over 2 months of heavy use. (My other butcher tray palette has done both, even though it's still usable.) For the past month, I've kept the same watercolors (Sennelier, Turner, and Holbein) in the tray as I've worked on a project--they've rewet beautifully and the enamel hasn't stained at all. When it comes time, I'm confident that it will clean right up and look good as new.Not sure if it's a need or even if there's room in my studio, but I could see myself buying this palette again.

Does what it’s supposed to!
Ordered this for my tube paints...the deeper side sections are meant to be the mixing area (holds water ) while the concave mid section keeps my paint dryer & not totally diluted by water... many reviewers have complained about the concave mid section & think the tray should be flat... this tray is SUPPOSED to be concave in the middle for the reason outlined above.... i love the fact that it’s enameled and as such doesn’t stain like plastic and clean up is a breeze! For these ageing eyes, having a pristine, non stained white background on which to judge paint colors when mixing is a must! Yes, there are a few nicks & flaws in the finish, but it’s nothing that will effect the use of this tray as a palette.. I am very pleased with this purchase & recommend it to other artists of all levels

Great price for a quality product
I have purchased two of these butcher palettes. I was using those plastic round palettes for a long time. Did all of the tricks so the paint would not bead up in pools on that tiny flat part all the time. But it was not until I learned about these on a you tube tutorial that I realized I was using the wrong type of palette. The tray makes it easier to blend/mix colors together to create shades of your own. Also, much easier to rise & wipe dry, no divots to clean out if the paint is dried on good. Also, the shape makes it easy to store since it is a rectangle. And you can also use it to hold or store paint supplies since it is a tray. I think I will have this one for a long time to come. So glad I found these.

Great for kids play, especially legos!
My sons (4 & 6) use these for painting, play doh, legos, everything. Great way to keep things organized and mess free while they’re playing. Especially great when putting together Lego sets, to divide up colors for easy finding. Plus they make it easy to stash away Lego sets in progress when company comes, then pull back out later without having to clean up the whole building area. We have 2, ordering 2 more.

The bottom is an issue
The top portion is excellent but the bottom has issues. The 4 points [I imagine that is where the tray was supported in the enameling process] are sharp, very sharp. Sharp enough to scratch a table or rip a tablecloth... Currently I have masking tape over them and will probably get some peel and stick felt pieces which should work better long term.

Absolute perfection.
I know a lot of people complain about the chips, my palette arrived with one on the rim but it really doesn't bother me. It's not where paint and water will be so there isn't any threat of rust. It's come to my attention that I'm very picky about my painting supplies. Lately I've been cleaning out my little studio (emphasis on little, it's basically a broom closet with a window, but it's mine and I'm grateful) and either finding new homes for palettes, bijoux boxes, etc, that I've accumulated over the years or haven't made the cut. Really the only palette I've consistently used in the last 20 years has been a 4"x4" travel palette and bijoux combo. As you can imagine I spend a lot of time cleaning. With all the negative comments about chips I have held off buying this for about a year, but I'm so glad I finally bought it. It's delightfully refreshing to have a larger space to mix on and when I do have to clean it, it's so easy with no stains in sight.

So cute
I bought this after reading Remodelista: The Organized Home, where they recommend trays to corral things on the counter, and enamel because it's classic and practical. I use it on my counter next to the stove and it holds my salt cellar, pepper grinder, a few small cutting boards (standing on end), and a bottle of honey. It's so cute and classic. I love enamel.

I nice little mixing palette.
Better than expected. It has a flat bottom. My old one, that was stolen had a slightly mounded bottom. I use it as a paint mixing palette so my paint would always run to the sides. I think this will work better. The only annoyance is that they glued the label on that it tore upon removal and it is stuck. Now I have to go through the bother of soaking and scraping to get it off. Someone really should have thought through that better.

great economical palette
i've had this on my wish list for over a year, finally got around to picking it up, one small chip in the gutter area, but covered that with top coat to let it survive a bit longer once water gets into the tray, only other spot which is just cosmetic on one top edge corner. i'll be using it later today for the first time and i can't wait. definitely a lot more mixing room than my current metal palettes

COULD BE MADE BETTER
Arrived quickly and well packed. It's perfect for large puddles of watercolors for washes. It's made well but does have large paint smears in the dark blue trim paint on the back from the factory a few dings in the enameling. It's OK for what I need it for. I have it 3 for sloppy workmanship.

Not a "true" butcher's tray...
This tray is not really a "butcher's tray"...the real thing is supposed to dome in the middle so that the extra paint runs off to the side of the tray. This tray is completely flat and the water pools in the middle. It also arrived damaged...chips on the edges of the tray.

Great tray. Perfect size. Doesn’t take up your whole desk/work area!!!

Cheap, poorly made and over-priced.
The paint is lumpy and missing in spots. Overall feels cheap and poorly made.
