The Church of Cheese: Gypsy Ritual in the American Heyday

If I could give this book 10 stars, I would. I couldn't put it down. She documents the lives of this people group so well.

When I started to read this I was looking for information about burials. I skimmed read as much as I could until I was sucked into the ways of the past.This is a very good book for reading. If your impression of gypsies is from the latest reality shows, you will fill in what was real and what was filmed for the Outsiders.The days of the traveling gypsies has changed. At least if you follow theses tracks you'll know where they led.

You can never know the full extent of the rroma culture unless you are part of it! Carol was partially accepted by a few of the machiwana rroma. To the Kalderash, the main and dominant group of Rroma in the U.S., she was never accepted! We wouldn't even think of letting her explore our culture the way she did with those Adams Machiwia. It was true, in her book, that they think they are better than the Kalderasha, but they are so Americanized that their "gypsyness" will disappear within a few generations. During Carol's stay in San Francisco, she was avoided like the plague, no, like she was marime!, by the Kalderash. We don't have anything against her, she is just another gyji (non gypsy). If you want to get an insight into our culture, check out some of the writings of Ian Hancock, the Rroma professor of linguistics from Texas. Thanks folks.

This book was well written and easy to follow the train of thought. It was also quite clear that the author spent quite a bit of time with the gypsy people and was knowledgeable about this topic. It was a bit long.

Carol Miller is a professional what??? Got dickmatized by that gypsy...well I think she knows the word I am looking for. This is a nice read. Should be filed under fiction for the most part as it is a highly romanticized view of the Roma. Got T. Bimbo to sweep streets? Good for your friend but I am sure that means she did something a million times worse. We foreign gypsies get flack all the time from these AMERICAN gypsies. We're in survival mode but they have all their money from fraud and still molest their sons & sleep with their bori.

Very interesting and easy to read.

I enjoyed the read. The book gave a look at the daily lives of an extended family of northern California Gypsies. I thought it was a nice combination of personal and anthropological slants. For me, it was a good companion to Bury Me Standing.
