Perfect supplement.
I enjoy this as a dissertation on political philosophy, however I have found a recently purchased anthology to be a bit more helpful. A nice outline of some ideas in contemporary political philosophy (cpp). If you have already read much of the source material then this could be an indespensible argument. If you haven't read much of the source material then maybe start there.

Love it ! Well written
I can truly say that this is one of the best written books on philosophy I've ever read. For my class, we essentially worked through the entire thing and kymlickas style made it easy to digest. Philosophy is never easy, but I think some of his, kymlicka's , writing style has resonated and even changed the way I am writing myself.

Astonishingly well-written, it's for academics, but it's also for everyone
Think of all the arguments over politics you've ever had with friends, relatives, and coworkers. Think of all the different points of view, as to what's more important -- X or Y. And think how, while these conversations don't usually happen every day, they actually strike at some of our most core values and our idea of what society and humanity should be.Now imagine if these arguments weren't with and among your friends, but rather the smartest people who think and write about these things for a living -- and not stodgy historical figures whose continued relevance you might question, but rather people from the past 50 years writing about the issues that face our countries today. And you've got this book.I consider this book a masterpiece in that it achieves something I've never seen before: it is simultaneously 100% rigorously and enthusiasticly academic, yet it is accessible to anyone who wants to genuinely understand the issues at hand. Kymlicka is not to be congratulated just on its both wide-ranging and intricate coverage... but also on his sheer skills of organizing, writing, and arguing. He manages to inspire a kind of genuine wonder at just how many questions there are, how incredibly hard they are to answer, how many good arguments there are on so many sides, and yet how import they remain.Contemporary political philosophy (the subject, not this book) is an odd beast: simultaneously one of the most niche and unknown subjects (how many people are even aware of it?), yet also arguably the most important subject of all as the answers we choose to its questions (again, often unaware of our choices) ultimately determine how we choose to get along or not get along with each other -- of more importance than ever in the age of Trump, Brexit, and so on.Kymlicka's book is the best starting point I can imagine for someone who wants to seriously grapple with these questions together with the best thinkers of our time -- both to understand the conversation and find references for where to follow next. I have just two requests for him, though: 1) a third edition, please! and 2) to write a 200-page version for non-academic audiences that covers the exact same material, only in broader strokes, more ideas and less authors, and lots more examples -- e.g. one I can get for my Dad, who wasn't a political science major like me.
