Four Stars
Good stuff for any DM of any system.

Interesting but not that interesting
Kobald does a good job exploring various parts of combat, as it relates to rpgs, but they also drunk to have little respect for it, as though it wasn't really worth being good at now than talking about it.

Disappointingly scattered
I picked up the Worldbuilding guide from these folks and was generally happy with it. This one, however, is a scattered mess. Of the many essays in it only a few are directly related to combat in a game, a few related to war in a game, and the rest are just fluff. For example, there's an essay about the difference between writing fiction and writing a game, and another about recon and scouting - the latter which is a shallow set of suggestions on character-building. Perhaps this book was a bridge too far, given that it's mostly system-neutral. Perhaps writing this from the conceit that it would be for F20 players would have made more sense, as it would have allowed the authors to be more specific.Overall the essays do not stay on-topic enough, and mostly read like polished & edited conversations about a very wide variety of topics in fantasy gaming, rather than combat, as the title indicates.

Five Stars
An excellent and varied compendium of role playing combat tied bits.
