Think of this as Sackett's Land: Part 2
Sackett's Land and To the Far Blue Mountains make a complete story of the life and times of the Sackett progenitor. The combination is entirely satisfactory. L'Amour had the ability to tell the story well, and he developed that ability with years of work and research. It is probably fortunate for Sackett enthusiasts that he wrote the first books in the series later in his writing career. We benefit from his seasoned skills. As in his westerns, in this book L'Amour focuses on what he finds interesting and what he thinks the reader will like to know. For the most part, he doesn't go into the technical detail that some authors pursue, but he paints a clear picture. The reader has a feeling of being there, or the strong sense that they could be there, right along with our hero. The Sackett family saga is the story of an American family. Like all of L'Amour's work, it is wholesome and educational. He consistently hits on themes that his readers recognize, the importance of education and critical thinking, respect for our fellow creatures and the world in which we live, loyalty to family and friends, and taking positive action to shape one's own life. All that and a fun story too, for the cost of five bucks.

L'Amour the Author
I have read every Louis L'Amour novel, novelette and article written. There is no other writer who in my opinion has a better grasp writing about his subjects than Mr. L'Amour. It is truly a shame that he was never able to complete the many follow up books he had planned to write; especially the series on the Sackett families. He wanted to expand on several of the family members but I think the one I most wanted was him to continue with Jubal Sackett. When he wrote about his western subjects, Mr. L'Amour not only weaved in events that were happening during the same time line as his books, he also wrote with a grasp of the areas he wrote about. He had visited many of the areas he wrote about as well and had spoken over the years to people who had lived during the latter half of the 1800's and many times had first or second hand knowledge of the people and places as well.I wish someone could pick up where he left off.....

The PERFECT narrator for a book.
John Curless is the PERFECT narrator for these first books of the Sackett series, about a set of people, their thoughts and experiences, that immigrate from the British Isles to the New World. With a serious, contemplative voice, Curless's English accent lends a haunting and seriously romantic tone to a series that in my opinion were some of L'Amours best works. The books were superlative ... and Curless's rendition is even better than the printed versions ... by a considerable margin. Prepare to be astonished! But the Immersion Reading (which I am for SOME INEXPLICABLE (sic) reason unable to review from the Audible site) fails miserably ... to the point that I have requested a refund. Several paragraphs before the end of ALMOST EVERY CHAPTER, the Immersion Reading ceases to operate, resuming operations somewhere between several paragraphs to several pages into the next chapter, making it impossible to even navigate to the start of the chapter from the ebook. If you CAN get to the start of a chapter and press the "play" icon, your are told that "Professional Narration is not availble from this location."The rate at which these errors occur is just unbelievably astounding, making Immersion reading a distinctly frustrating and unpleasant experience. Acquiring the audible book via "Immersion Reading" is cheaper than buying JUST the audible book, but the sync rate between the ebook and the Audible book make it just not worth experiencing in my opinion. If you want your Audible books cheaper, go ahead and purchase the Immersion Reading ... but if you are looking for a pleasant experience via Immersion Reading ... be ready to be very, very disappointed. If the rate of errors found in this Audible book via Immersion Reading were matched in ebooks by, for instance, spelling errors, then I think people would cease buying ebooks. Audible calls this error rate "Acceptable" ... I DO NOT. The lack of professional performance in this matter is just execrable.

Exciting
I have read this book several times. In my opinion it is the best by Louie L’Amore. Love reading about early settlers in Blue Ridge area.3

The continuing story of Sackett's Land
This is, in effect, the sequel to Sackett's Land and continues the non-stop adventure of men who comprised our historical roots. Much of the story is unbelievable until you consider our contemporary "soft" perspective versus the immense physical hardships that early pioneers were dealt on a regular basis. As with other Sackett stories, the language can be a bit on the rough side (to match the rough characters in the stories), but not vulgar or profane. Also, the love that is depicted is pure, respectful, rather than eliciting base desires. Also, there was nothing boring about the Audio Books version of the story. I drove 28 hours in 2 days by myself and did not get sleepy!

This is one I'll come back to...
This is my second Sackett novel to read, following Sackett's land. This was a sprawling, almost epic look at Barnabas Sackett's journey from England to America. This is where you get to see the start of the Sackett clan! It's got action, heroism and heart. L'Amour is an amazing storyteller and I can't wait to read the rest of his stories.

Dreadful Edit
Louis L'Amour was a brilliant story teller. This isn't fantastic literature by any stretch but he's brilliant at keeping the pages turning. Hombre is by far and away his best work in my opinion but I enjoyed this and would certainly recommend it. I'd even pick up a few more of this series to get me through the long winter evenings!Beware - the editing is terrible. Loads of spelling errors, random blank pages, words repeated etc but it is a cheap copy.

I am back
I used to have all Louis L'Amours books when I was younger, they naturally went the way of all things. Recently when on Amazon, I rediscovered them and have started enjoying them again.
