Jane Austen in Context (Literature in Context)

Interesting read
The book is essentially a collection of essays that provide historical context for her work. It does read a bit like a text book, but it is still a fascinating read. Ms. Austen makes references in her books that might not make sense to the modern reader. This book helps explain some of those references, which makes you admire her even more.

More Information on Jane Austen
This book gives the historical background of the times in which Jane Austen lived. It is a book of research, not a novel or strictly biographical. Only if you are interested in all things Jane Austen would you enjoy this book. I love it.

A very good reference and reader
An excellent collection of essays at an academic level. Comprehensive yet well thought out in terms of selection to cover related Austen subjects.

Comprehensive, scholarly and timely
This is a useful critical text for Austen readers and scholars seeking the 'bigger picture' in terms of historical and cultural contexts. It's accessible enough to be useful for Literature undergraduates but knowledgeable and detailed enough to be a shelf/reference wok for postggrads.

Required textbook
I returned to university last fall and started with a course on the works of Jane Austen. This book was a required text but unavailable through the university bookstore. The price was good and the quality of the book was excellent.

Comprehensive
A comprehensive set of brief essays covering all aspects of Jane Austen – biography, critical reception, literary context and social background. Mercifully, although the current edition is quite recent, we are spared Theory and its hobby-horses, with only the chapter on current literary criticism paying a brief courtesy visit there. That is not to say that this is Lucy Worsley-National Trust Austen: you come away from the book with a very clear picture of just how much human drudgery and misery was involved in maintaining the life-style of the “three or four country families” she wrote about.
