Version 2: The second best orangutan yet
Here we have our second version of Dr. Zaius in the clothing more people probably recognize actor Maurice Evans wearing from both the original film and the 2nd picture "Beneath the Planet of the Apes."The articulation is somewhat limited because of the coat, but suits my needs. After all, Zaius is an old man, er, ape, so he isn't going to be doing any yoga poses in my display. To add to the verisimilitude of the character's elderly disposition is his one accessory -- his cane. Same mold as the previous figure, same color; but when I compare the two, the first cane appears more weathered. Perhaps that is merely a fluke of the paint applications, but I'm curious what others have to say about this. With an all-new sculpt, other than upper legs, waist and presumably his torso; you are definitely getting your money's worth for the figure itself, as opposed to the gorilla soldiers where the only differences are the 3 different head sculpts -- accessories notwithstanding. I feel the need to point this out as posters on forums who don't have the figure think the only difference from v.1 is the coat. The coat and "shoes" look great, but my favorite parts of this figure are his hands -- they're huge -- and more inline with what I would expect from an orangutan! The hair is fantastic, and the nails and character are nicely done. I thought Cornelius and Zira would be the extent of detail on the hands we would see on the "Apes" figures, but Zaius sets a new bar. I now look forward to seeing Julius' hands when the figure comes out.Now the reason I only gave 4 stars -- the head sculpt and flesh color. The sculpt just isn't up to par with the rest we have seen from this line. Whereas the other figures' faces actually look like photo-real simulacrums of the actors in they're make-up appliances, or in Zaius v.1's case, a specific character at least; this one looks more toyish, with a generic orangutan "background" look. Remember those terrible pull-over masks used in the second film? Perhaps that was NECA's intent since a lot of people were complaining about us getting the same character in two consecutive waves. V.1's hair looks like a layer of hair on top of a layer of skin on his head and face, v.2's hair looks like the sculptor cut the lines with an exacto knife as an afterthought. While it is debatable how much of Evans is actually in the first figure, I see even less of any human component in this figure. I wish the same detail given to the hands was applied to the head. The flesh is orange on this figure as opposed to the beautiful leathery tan that was used on the first. I admit that in many of the washed out photos from the time Zaius's skin does appear to be orange, but it isn't. This only cheapens the look of the figure. The rest of the color on the figure is excellent and very classy. A lot of collectors decided to skip the first figure once v.2 was announced, I think that would be a mistake as my opinion is that v.1 is the better figure overall. So with my complaints out of the way I'm still very happy with this figure and especially the line as a whole. This is the Planet of the Apes toy line I have waited for since the early '70s and my current favorite line to collect, barely beating out my other life-long passion -- Star Wars.

I snapped this up as quick as I saw it!
"Beware Taylor! You may not like what you find." What can I say but NECA has done it again and has made this nostalgic fool who mostly missed out on the original MEGO's as a child but am now a happy camper! Great sculpt and detail added to my other NECA "apes". I do prefer the Series 1 sculpt for Zaius hence the missing star in the rating.

Monkey business
NECA does it again, this is the Dr Zaius I remember from the original (and best) POTA movie (as opposed to the last Zaius figure with the costume from the end of the movie). Exquisite sculpt and an all round lovely collectable of an iconic 60s character. Some say that NECA do have problems with dodgy paint and articulation but the Zaius that I received was perfect so no complaints there. Display this alongside NECA's Zera and Cornelius, Ursus and his soldiers and transport yourself to The Planet Of The Apes. Long may this line continue.
