Great Colt Reference
This book is well written and a valuable resource for anyone researching this historical firearm, especially here in the West where they were more common.

Colt's 1878 Double Action Revolver
Overall it is a good book on the 1878 Colt Revolver. I was expecting a more technical book on how the internals in the action interconnect to make it operate...such as in a "patent application". My reasoning is that these revolvers(incl. the notorious failure 1877 model(s) are very prone to failure of the springs and machined parts as there is NO photo showing how these parts should appear as in individual pieces & how they connect to make the action operate. Parts are not available due to it being an OBSOLETE model...and also it is near impossible to locate a competent gunsmith to even consider working to repair one of these..Beware of unscrupulous repair persons...get an estimate BEFORE sending your valuable item out for repair...! In favor of the book I liked the various photos of the varied barrels and plain vs.engraved examples. I found for the most part the distributor(s) on what they ordered/expected & what types of specifics they were sent to from the factory was boring to say the least as way too many pages were devoted to that portion of the book. I expected to ask the author Mr. Wilkerson some specific questions regarding the book and the revolver from the contact information as provided in the book and when I attempted to do so I was disappointed the contact information was NOT current/available...so sad. I also would have appreciated a basic range of serial numbers and to whom delivered/date etc....as the cost of the book at $62.00 + could have included that information....BUT it seems that that specific information is WELL protected as a source for overcharging the seeker to obtain that information.....as does Winchester/Remington etc.....at least just for curiosities sake.
