What a lovely bonfire!
These two books have little in common with the Disney musical. I was shocked at how much the Disney people tampered with these stories. But then, that was the hallmark of Disney, to hack away at classic Children’s Literature. The books take place in England. They feature three siblings who encounter a witch of little confidence. There are adventures, humorous and otherwise. Both books are engaging, enjoyable. But. Just to be clear, there is no singing, no dancing, no war, no London Blitz, and definitely no Nazis.

First Tales before...
This book was actually two books, written before the popular Borrowers series. This is different from a Walt Disney film. It’s written in simplified English. Yet a very good tale told in two parts. A pity she didn’t write more sequels as with the Borrowers. It’d be interesting in what happens next. Never mind the Disney part.

Hardcover not worth the extra cost
I bought this as a gift for my twin granddaughters - I can't evaluate the content although from other reviews it is probably quite good. I paid $10 extra to have a hardcopy edition but was very disappointed to find that basically it is a paperback with a hard cover. I thought the paper would be nicer but it is low quality porous and doesn't open well or stay flat. I think I will try to return it.

This was good. I had never read the book
This was good. I had never read the book, but had seen the Disney movie, and figured my kids might like to read the book before seeing the movie. It's pretty different (obviously it still has to do with a flying magic bed, but there are no Nazi's in the book, and they use it to go back in time etc...). It was a fun book, my kids did enjoy it (probably a little more than the movie), and it wasn't horrible to read aloud to them (some kids books are horrible to read aloud). I would recommend it.

Charming book
Bedknob and Broomstick is the inspiration for the movie "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" but is quite a different story. This book is a charming and simple fantasy. It is not set in WWII as the film is and there are no soldiers or armies. This book describes the childrens' encounters with the village's secret witch and their adventuring together in space and time. The manners and relationships are very English pre-war. It is a little reminiscent of the tone of Wind in the Willows. The book is divided into two parts as it was originally two books, however the characters and situations are the same so it can easily be read as a single book.

Harry Potter meets Mary Poppins
I wore out my copy of this book when I was a child. As an adult, I bought a copy to read aloud to my stepkids, aged 8 and 12, who are Harry Potter lovers. This book has lost none of its charm over time, and I find myself secretly picking it up and reading ahead when the kids aren't around. The author created clever but not annoying children - a rare find, especially in these obnoxious Nickelodean times. The sparsely placed illustrations are just as I remember - creating beautiful images to further fuel the imagination. I was afraid the children would lose interest during our storytimes, but they were drawn into this book from Page 1. We've shared laugh out loud moments throughout, and my husband has taken to creeping into the room to listen during story time.

Not the movie
"Bed Knobs and Broomsticks" is one of my favorite movies. I always loved slapstick scene with the animated suits of armor taking down the German army. But the movie is only loosely based on the book. The book takes its own, completely different direction. While many of the characters are similar, I would consider the book and the movie different stories altogether. While I was disappointed the book had no German army and no suits of armor, I enjoyed this version of Miss Price, Carey, Charles, and Paul's adventures very much.

Great fun
Very pleased = except for a big BARGAIN sticker that would not come off, even with sticky removing fluid and so tore the cover.
