Burning

Highly recommend this film.A slow, chilling mystery/thriller that keeps you interested from the start.Honestly, one of the best films I've seen.

If you can, watch from start to finish uninterrupted. Will need your full attention! At the end I so wanted to discuss with anyone else who had seen it but knew no one that had. I had to resort to looking on line for other opinions on the movie's possible meanings and messages. I was glad I went in not knowing what to expect. No preconceptions!

Aptly, this is a slow-burner of a film, one that teems with ambiguity and mystery. Its rather simple premise of a writer who bumps into an old friend, and agrees to feed her cat whilst she's away, leads the main character on a downward spiral of obsession. The three lead actors are all fantastic, as is the direction, use of colour etc. Like I've said, this is a slow-burner and not everyone will be enamoured with it. Not every scene appears to have a narrative purpose or have any kind of reason to exist, and in that regard, it doesn't follow the conventions of classical cinema. There's not much more I can add to that without spoiling anything, but if you're open to trying something different and mysterious, than Burning is a brilliant film to experience.

A little unsual but really enjoyed this.

We had great expectations as the critics over promised, but watching it was slow to the point of tedium. The characters were not vey interesting at all. We kept hoping that the plot would develop or resolve in a interesting way , but it left us vey disappointed!

Beautiful film - leaves you thinking about it long after its finished. Strongly recommend!

A very interesting film with some great messages about how we draw conclusions. Sadly however, the film's core mystery is by design intractable and serves only to make these points. Some may feel disappointed by finding this out after the film has ended.

Brilliantly written, wonderfully acted psychological thriller with an ending that will knock your socks off. Can't want to watch it again. SEE THIS MOVIE!

If you are looking for an movie with complicated characters, a slow buildup to a satisfactory but not necessarily a Hollwood-type happy ending then this movie is for you. This is a mystery-thriller but not an action movie. The slow build up reminds me of Hitchcock's "Vertigo". Also so does the ending which is the only logical conclusion to this mystery thriller. The print is beautiful. However, the extras are minimal. If you a collector of international or mystery thrillers this is a must. For everyone else you may want to watch it digitally.

Viele erfolgreiche asiatische Filme werden vom Verleih als die neue Sensation aus Asien gehyped, meist sind die Filme dann gut, aber nicht so gut. "Burning" verdient die Bezeichnung Sensation, denn Koreaner Chang-Dong-Lee fasziniert mit seinem ersten Spielfilm nach 8 Jahren.Drehbuchautorin Oh Jung-mi adaptierte die Romanvorlage von keinem geringeren als Japan's Literatursuperstar Haruki Murakami. Es war ihre Idee seine Kurzgeschichte "Scheunenabbrennen" (die hier zu Gewächshäuser werden) zu verfilmen und Chang Dong Lee hielt dies für eine interessante Aufgabe, obwohl in der Geschichte nicht viel passiert.Die Vorlage von Haruki Murakami habe ich nicht gelesen, aber dafür einige andere Werke. Psych-Thriller, das wird einige verwundern, wenn sie den Namen Murakami lesen. Aber bei genauerem Betrachten ist der Film typisch Murakami.Jongsu trifft zufällig seine alte Klassenkameradin Haemi und obwohl er sie zuerst nicht erkennt , landen sie zusammen im Bett. Haemi erzählt ihm, dass sie eine Schönheitsoperation hatte und Jongsu sie immer ignoriert und und nur einmal mit ihr sprach und sie dabei hässlich nannte. Nun verliebt sich Jongsu in Haemi, doch sie fliegt nach Afrika. In dieser Zeit kümmert er sich um ihre Wohnung und füttert ihre Katze, die er aber nie zu Gesicht bekommt. Als Haemi verspätet nach Korea zurückkommt, wartet Jongsu schon auf sie. Doch sie kommt in Begleitung mit Ben, einem anderen Mann, der sich Luxusartikel leisten kann und locker durchs Leben wandelt. Eines Tages verschwindet Haemi komplett von der Bildfläche, Jongsu sucht überall nach ihr und misstraut dabei auch Ben.Ein kleiner Auszug aus der Handlung, der durch eine Fülle wichtiger Einzelheiten noch viel bedeutender wird. Als Psychothriller wird der Film beworben und das Mysteriöse umgibt ihn auch. In gewisser Weise erinnert dies an ein Werk von Takashi Miike, doch wo Miike mit der langsamen Erzählung einen gewaltigen Schock vorbereitet, so entfaltet "Burning" noch viel mehr Spannung durch die menschlichen und zwischenmenschlichen Dramen um Liebe, Eifersucht und Neid. Selbst wenn der Film durchaus Elemente des Psychthrillers hat, würde ich in dennoch viel stärker als für ein Werk aus Murakami's Feder typisches komplexes Drama betrachten.Weshalb der Film heute noch eine FSK 16 bekommt, erscheint mir Schleierhaft. Der Film bietet nur eine Gewaltszene, die nicht einmal besonders graphisch inszeniert wurde und etwas nackte Haut, die allerdings kein FSK 16 gerechtfertigt. Wobei wir uns vielleicht mittlerweile hier doch auch in die Schein-Prüderie der US-Amerikaner bewegen."Burning" ist eine absolute Empfehlung, bietet eine spannende, mysteriöse Handlung und in den Dialogen und Zwischen den Zeilen noch Vieles mehr. Und obwohl es ein komplexes Drama ist, wurde der Film mit einer herrlichen Leichtigkeit verfilmt, die den Film sehr zugänglich macht.
