Q: Is this cheese lactose-free?

Vuvuzela's comment is wrong. Cheese is made through a variety of processes, but most require enzymes (like from rennet or bacteria) as part of the process. Milk sugars (lactose) are converted to lactic acid by some forms of bacteria; and into galactose and glucose by certain enzymes. Either one could naturally leave a cheese with zero or close to zero remaining lactose. Regardless, cheesemakers may then add lactose as a handy sweetener; or lactase (the specific enzyme that breaks down lactose) to remove any remaining lactose content. In short, lots of cheeses naturally have zero or close to zero lactose, but it's not often tested and put on the label. And other brands specifically add lactase to their cheese to ensure it's fine for people with lactose intolerance. Kraft used to do that for almost all of its sliced and shredded cheeses. Apparently, not anymore. Cabot still does it, but that's hard to find in most areas of the country, and they only make cheddars. Cracker barrel cheeses do it, but again, they make almost exclusively cheddars. Kraft was the one widely-available brand with reliably zero lactose on a wide variety of cheeses. Frankly, them stopping the practice, sucks; for the estimated 20% of people who experience lactose intolerance at some point in their lifetime.
