Janice Larsen's perspective...
... it is to be assumed that Janice Larsen undertook a lot of research in order to give such insights in this book. To me, if her research is correct, then she gave a very honest depiction of Annie Sullivan, not gloryifing her, not trying to make her out to be a goody two-shoes. Rather she showed her as a lady who was embittered by her own sad, hard, upbringing, but who, perhaps because of this, became the person who could and did mould Helen Keller into the brilliant, compassionate person she became. I have always wanted to know about Annie Sullivan, what made her, and Janice Larsen provided this for me. Thank you.

Perserverance,: The Story of Anne Sullivan Macy (Helen Keller's Teacher)
I have always been in awe of Helen Keller and have read many stories about her. This book however is of Anne Sullivan, who was Helen's amazing teacher and her constant companion. While I have not yet finished this book, I have to say it is a very well written and very interesting story. It gives great insight to what made Anne Sullivan the teacher that she was. She came from a time of great adversity, and overcame that adversity in order to help a young child overcome her own adversities. Truly amazing this woman. Equally as amazing as Helen herself. There could have been no Helen without her teacher.....I highly recommend this book.

A Disappointment for Helen Keller Scholars
I purchased this book because since childhood I have been reading every source I could get my hands on about Helen Keller. This book takes primary sources and then the author attempts to write from the perspective of Anne Sullivan. I have never seen such an unsympathetic depiciton of either Helen or Teacher.First of all, Anne is not referred to as Teacher at any time during the novel. We know that this was an extremely important piece of her identity, considering that it is the name she gave Helen for herself. Anne in this novel is a poverty stricken needy selfish woman with an unhealthy dependence on Helen and the Kellers' money. Perhaps even more disturbing, none of the joy she felt in teaching Helen is ever portrayed. I was upset with this purchase and promptly returned it for refund

Perserverance
I liked the book a lot. I didn't know much about Anne Sullivan prior to reading this book. I felt that I really got to knowher and was amazed about how she survived and came from the brink to become one of the most famous peopleto ever live.

The other side of the story
Very enlightening; how like God to use what little we have to do great things! It would be impossible to separate Anne's and Helen's story.

Out of time
With the abundance of source material available about Helen Keller it is unaccountable that this book is rife with errors. The complexity of Anne Sullivan's personality is transformed into a pious, banal cardboard cutout. The use of terms like "Moms" not common either in 19th century Ireland or in 19th c Americans dis tracts the reader. The optimism and theism and sweet suffering of her last years as described in the book is not consistent with her actual agonizing bouts of anguish and depression.I greatly admire Mrs Macy because she showed perseverance not in sweet submission to the God she renounced as a teenager, but in her integrity in persevering with her academic vision against criticism and plots by the authorities of day.

There is a lot written about Helen Keller, but what we know of Anne Sullivan is as the teacher of Helen. This is a complete story of Anne. I was particularly interested in her years spent at Tewksbury. I thought the author did a great job of presenting her research in an informative and helpful manner.

Perseverance : The Story of Anne Sullivan Macy
An excellent book! An easy read but extremely enjoyable, however the style is rather depressing. I recommend this for all readers over the age of 9!

story of Anne Sullivan
It was a depressing account of her upbringing during her early years. An oh poor me account of her life. Helen Keller became a vibrant believer in the Lord, but Anne had no room for religion or God. I thought that Anne was instrumental in Helen becoming a believer but from what I read that is far from the truth. Helen Keller's testimony of Anne , her friendship, and loving care made me think that Helen drew from that richness of faith in Anne life. It seems Helen loved Anne as friend only and not as fellow believer in the Lord. It seems that Anne enjoyed and became somewhat jealous of the limelight of fame that surrounded Helen. Helen became an international sensation and so became famous and Anne seemed to enjoy and gloat in Helen's fame.
