Oscar Schmidt6 String OF2 Folk Acoustic Guitar, Natural (OF2-A)

Excellent first guitar. Great value.
This is a great value. This guitar looks great and is very well made. The sound is good, not great. It is somewhat weak sounding and tinny. This is in comparison to other low and mid priced guitars. It seems to be holding tune well, although the strings are still new and stretching. This is not a toy. Really crappy (toy) guitars can sell for similar prices or even more. You probably will not be able to get a better sounding guitar in this price range.I think the folk size is better than 3/4 size for young teens and small adults. Dreadnought size can be uncomfortable to play, especially for beginners. Be careful if you want a case (especially a hard case). Bring the guitar with you to to check the fit. The size and shape of this guitar may make it slightly more difficult to find the right case. Don't buy one that is too big, the case should fit very snug.I highly recommend this guitar for this price range.

What a beauty!
You simply can not see the beauty of this guitar from the pictures! So much more than I expected! The tone of this guitar is smooth and mellow, I love it! The rose wood frets and craftsmanship are what you would expect with a much higher end guitar! Also is the perfect size, not quite as big as a full drednaught.

Decent valued student/learner/budget guitar
Although Oscar Schmidt is not the line of quality guitars it once was (read on) this particular model, for the price, is not a bad guitar, especially for a beginner: make no mistake though, this is built to be a budget guitar, and doesn't have much in line of adjustments/setup outside of the truss rod that can be made to improve the quality of its sound/action/etc...however, for 76 plus shipping, this isn't a bad internet buy esp. if you're looking for a student/learner guitar or just a cheap acoustic to bang on... Also note that when a guitar is labeled as a "folk" guitar it is usually a very general term that merely refers to its size (meaning it is larger than a 3/4 size but smaller than a dreadnought), and doesn't mean much else in terms of its craftsmanship, especially when its used to describe a budget guitar like this.Regarding my opening comment, Oscar Schmidt is now owned by the same company that currently owns Washburn - the company is US Music Corporation. They bought both brand names around the same time (circa 2000 - the exact year is virtually impossible to find via the web) from Fretted Industries, and while they continued to make good guitars under the Washburn name, they made the once highly respectable Oscar Schmidt into a budget line guitar. Any Oscar Schmidts pre circa 2000 are of a higher quality, both Fretted Industry made ('79 to circa 2000) as well as vintage ones owned by the company of origin. Read my buyers guide on both Oscar Schmidt and Washburn by searching the "So You'd like to" Buyer Guides under "So you'd like to own an Oscar Schmidt"

Good beginner guitar
This is a nice little guitar. I bought it in green and it is absolutely beautiful! Nice for beginners--the action is not too high, but most axe shops will do a new guitar set up for you where they check the neck and adjust the action if needed. You may find that you want to upgrade the strings after a while, but overall a nice little guitar that will do the job. A classical guitar case fits this one well. I found the dreadnaught gig bag too big. I have 2 Oscar Schmidt guitars and like them both very much!

Value For Money
As a beginner to the instrument I felt I had to do a lot of research before I spent my hard earned cash on a potentionally temporary hobby - a friend of mine advised me against buying a "cheap guitar" as a low quality instrument would only hinder my ability to learn.A few hours of research later and I was confident this was the guitar for me;A Folk guitar has steel strings - whereas nylon strings are typically for classical guitars, playing classical music. Steel strings have more musical capabilities as far as the sound of the instrument goes.It also has a lower action - the distance between the strings and the fretboard. Sounds perfect for me, as a beginner, to play the frets a little easier. It has an adjustable truss rod - not that you should need it unless you wish to change the strings, or you receive a particularly poor item. This feature allows you to adjust the bow of the fretboard, which can solve problems like 'fret buzz'.It's an Oscar Schmidt - who were once makers of high quality instruments, but have since been bought out by Washburn, who make rather expensive, high quality instruments. This is their lower budget line, but I believe the quality is still there. Similar to buying a low budget smart phone by a high quality manufacturer like Sony.It also looks really nice, and I picked it up in a half price sale, as an added bonus.I waited a couple of weeks before reviewing this item so I could give better feedback on it. I wasn't sure myself to begin with so I took it to my friend and he was impressed with it, which made me feel better!I like it, I've already put more than a few hours into it and I'm really starting to pick it up now. It feels good to know you have the right tool for the job. If you're a beginner, I recommend spending that bit extra and go with a reputable manufacturer. There are too many things in this world which are made in a knock off factory in the back end of China.
