When communication is critical !

I am not a HAM operator , but I started out in the USMC as a Field Communications Expert. I purchased these radios because they can easily be programed to citizens GMRS , FRS channels " family radio " but they are much more powerful with a choice of 5 0r 10 watts and in an emergency it is legal to use HAM channels. I use them mostly at sea to communicate between boats because Marine VHF Channels are heavily monitored and restricted. I just know that some HAM operator is going to scream that it is illegal to transmit on GMRS/FRS at more than one watt ! Well to that I say ! I served 22 years to protect my freedoms and yours , be quiet !

Quality, Power and Price!!!

In the beginning was something I doubt if the TYT UV 8000DIt really gave 10 watts of output power. To my surprise if correct. (measure correctly see suitable measuring instrument photos).Very Surprised with the Design, Robust the plastic Resistant and strong. among other advantages The radio includes 2 antennas a standard (classic) and a longer one (gain) Very good Yields with both. It also includes the programming cable and a CD with Software. Download Latest Software from the Web.Very Easy to Program, almost all Chinese Radios are Similar. The software is very complete and easy to use, besides it is in English. There are many Guides on the Web that can help with how it should be programmed. Visit the TYT Official Website.Crossband, Auxiliary Repeater, ideal to make links in case of emergencies or to link or users at a distance from an intermediate point. Very easy To make menu 11 Activate or deactivate. (requires to activate the function by the software) very easy to do.The sensitivity of TX / RX for now I have not tested at all but in the next few days I will update my Evaluation. So far 5 Star all

A lot of radio for the money.

Works great. Love the cross-band repeater feature. Very important for me. The included programming software is very intuitive and works great. Excellent battery life. It looks and feels like a solid radio. No issues with performance. The included longer antenna also helps to gain some ERP and RX gain.

Excellent Quality

I have been using Baofeng radios for a bit now, mostly as scanners. This TYT has been excellent quality, the cross band repeater was not too difficult to figure out (plenty of information on the internet, especially YouTube). The radio is very clear, the antenna that came with it is a good quality one. Overall, this is performing as expected, or slightly better. I very much recommend these radios.

I was physically burned by this product, do yourself a favor and read my review.

Update January 2020. These radios are 100% total junk. The licensing requirement is it relevant because these radios don’t even transmit one city block. These things are absolutely awful. Also when holding the radio in my left hand the battery contact was against my palm, I squeezed the transmit button and got burnt. I highly recommend you keep shopping. Original review October 2018.I purchased these because I need good long-range walkie talkies for my business. I am unable to use these because the product packaging is not clear on what type of license I need to obtain. big mistake on my part. Do not buy these unless you are familiar with the licensing requirements. I still don't know whether or not I can use them.

Build Quality on par with most American and Japanese radios, tedious programming

Very solidly made, high quality dual band jam transceiver with cross repeater functionality. Problem? The excruciating programming due to a software package that is a hundred separate, incoherent files. If you do manage to setup the programming software, you run into the use of dat tables that are not available for free, and it’s impossible to import the many csv files available by ham community. The silly spreadsheet software blocks cut and paste, so guess how fun it is to program. You literally will individually input frequencies and other data one at a time... making your own day file after many hours. The other alternative is buying preformatted dat files for $70 or so. The manual is laughable, and some programmable items are a mystery to all who have tried to make sense of what they actually represent. The manual simply is an enumeration of features, specs, elaboration of key functions from the printed abbreviations to complete words. Keep in mind, this radio can actually function as a repeater for a team using radios to communicate and where repeaters are scarce, such as mountainous areas with valleys therein. Also, make no mistake, this is a baofeng made radio. Question: why are the lower quality, lower powered, cheaper baofeng labeled radios so much easier to program? Answer: CHIRP comparability, csv programming files, and a very active hobbyist community. The community has actually assembled a full, detailed, coherent manual...all for free. So if you are someone who likes to leave no portion of the radio spectrum undiscovered, you will be doing much tedious grunt work every time you want to program the unit. Otherwise, this is truly an affordable, super high quality 5W/10W radio with a 3800 mAH battery that slides ever so perfectly onto the radio, like closing the door on a high end Mercedes Benz. I so wanted this radio to work for me, but data entry is the bane of my existence. I also like to discover every feature, some of which are essentially undecipherable. So much potential left untapped. I would simply lay out couple hundred for a radio that uses well established software and community support. I would even lay out cash for a high good Japanese made radio with open firmware support and documentation that is not simply a waste of paper.

Cross band actually works! Menu is horrible!

Ham for over 9 years. Not my first Chinese radio. First off, the on board menu system is freaking terrible. Just the worst. I find the Baofungs quite easy to use actually, but this is a mess. On the other hand, the build construction is pretty good. It's got a very solid feel to it, which I liked. I bought it for the cross band repeater function (to make a personal repeater). Note, you MUST use the installed software (not CHIRP) to program the radio and even to activate the cross band repeat (why it is not enabled by default, I do not know). But, once you turn that on, it actually does work! Worked pretty well, the response time to kick on the TX is fairly quick for such a cheap radio.
