Enjoyed it
I enjoyed this. To be honest, it was fairly predictable, but that didn't matter as long as I was enjoying the journey. I'm not quite as intrigued by the other characters (that I assume are the heroes of their own books in the series) but maybe they'll get my attention in later books. This was a good read and I intend to read the second book.

Far too many coincidences and cliches.....
One of my top ten historical romances ever is by MJP - The Rake - and I just can't believe that this book is written by the same person!? I haven't read her most recent books because they are not my thing but she has returned to historical romance and I decided I would definitely give it a go. I'm just glad I bought it 2nd hand on Amazon and didn't throw good money away on a new copy. The plot is unbelievable but so are other plots in other books yet if it's well written and the characters are good then you can suspend your disbelief. This book was not only full of unlikely coincidences but it was so flat, the characters so uninspiring and one dimensional, the cliches and coincidences piled high one on top of the other that I was just snorting in total disbelief by the time the last long lost family turned up with barely any outrage on the part of the heroine (whose father had deceived her all her life). I am deeply disappointed and I definitely won't be giving any of the other books in the series a look in. Straight to the charity shop with my copy.

excellent
A great read, lots of storyline and action. You can visualise the scenes in the story. The story hits on some themes that are not normally common in these types of books - but were handle with ease. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

I couldn't put it down!
I couldn't put this down and when I finished it I was soon looking for more titles in the series !The characters are well drawn and you have great sympathy with them .There are a few unlikely coincidences but it doesn't spoil the story.

Loved it!
I read the synopsis and fell in love! I mean how could I not when it has my favourite amnesia trope and a woman desperate to escape a horrible suitor. Scandalous. Bought it and read it in a single day, I even got my friend to read it on her vacation!! Will definitely be looking into the series, this book was amazing.

Nice Story
Actually this is the second book by Mary Jo Putney that I read and I can say she writes nice stories. In Loving a Lost Lord there is suspense, fun, romance in short all the requirements for a nice and sastifactory love story. I personnally love the main characters, as u read u develop an interest in all the different characters and u will like to know their individual stories as we can see the beginning of another story between two characters. It is a very interesting story and gives u the interest in reading more of Mary Jo Putney's books. I have the 3 books of this collection Lost Lords and each story is interesting. Anyhow wish u an interesting read.

Finale disastroso
Una bella storia fino all'80% del libro ma purtroppo una conclusione che ha dell'incredibile e rovina una buona lettura. Sorprese, riconoscimenti, rivelazioni inverosimili che il povero lettore non si merita

Implausible plot elements ruin a promising story line
The story line had great promise but was poorly executed. All the previously dead characters were resurrected with extremely implausible back stories and the reactions to these resurrections as well as the explanations thereof, are nothing short of astounding:1. Why would a loving mother fail to contact her grownup son for over 2 decades, despite longing to meet him?2. How can a daughter raised under the impression her mother is dead, "dissolve into peals of laughter" when finding out her father lied for over 20 years, took her away from her well to do mother, twin sister and extended family and brought her up in deprivation while precariously wandering around the country gambling for a living? How can she maintain her good humor, once it's explained that it was all due to a "silly" fight, and her father's wounded ego, which he soothed with random women met along the way over 2 decades?3. How could a woman whose husband abandoned her and took one of her daughters away for 20 years, out of sheer ego, be waiting anxiously for and take her idiot spouse back after 2 decades, no questions asked?4. How could a daughter deprived of her twin and her father for her entire life, feel no resentment towards said father, and eagerly go live with him, after his prodigal return from a wounded ego trip that lasted 20 years?Utterly unbelievable plot elements ruin what had the potential to be a great novel. Very unlike MJP, who is usually extremely skilled at weaving her tales. What went wrong?

FOR ME THIS IS REALLY A 3.5 STAR READ - MS PUTNEY IS SOOOO GOOD
Mariah and her father have acquired a wonderful estate. Charles Clarke won the estate in a card game. It will be the first permanent home Mariah has known. After her father leaves to go make peace with his family, Mariah is informed that he is dead. She is devastated. The man providing this information is the man who lost the estate and he plans to force Mariah to marry him in order that he can regain his property. Not a nice guy.Through some unusual circumstances, Mariah finds a man who is near death. He has washed up on the beach and appears to have been in the water for a very long time. When he is conscious and admits he has no memory of his name or his past. Mariah tells him he is her husband and his name is Adam.In reality, the man is a wealthy duke. When friends find him, after sharing their stories of the past brings very few reminders for Adam, he is basically still an amnesiac.Adam is told that the accident which created the ship sinking and his being thrown into the sea was no accident. Someone created the explosion on purpose.Mariah and Adam are interesting characters. They both had childhoods which were anything but normal. Mariah lived a life of wandering around the country with her gambler father. Adam was emotionally abused because his father was married to an Indian woman and that made Adam different from what the English public were willing to accept. Both of them are intelligent people who share a strong sense of empathy for their fellow creatures.Adam is a very heroic hero. The secondary characters add a great deal to the story. Adam's friends are willing to do nearly anything to protect him. Each of them are colorful and are introduced in a manner that makes me believe they will appear in the Lost Lords series. They convince Adam to return to London to move back into his life and responsibilities. Even very minor characters are created to add texture to the fabric of the story. The plot starts out wonderfully. I am a fan of Ms Putney's writings. This is a well developed story, but it becomes too busy toward the end. Some of the events are improbable even for a romance novel. There is mystery, there are attempts at murder and all in all a great deal of action.I like this book, and I am well aware that I will fall under Ms Putney's spell with her next book that I read.

Not very interesting
Amnesia is not a sturdy trope to lean on, and it's done poorly here. But once I accepted that it was the central point of Adam's character, it turned out that I liked him, and the bulk of his interactions with Mariah. Whom I didn't care for, because I also don't have much patience for a liar whose one, simple lie snowballs out of control with potentially devastating consequences.I mean, she had sex with him under the completely false pretense of already being his wife, when she wasn't. Amnesia really messes with consent issues, doesn't it?But Adam's charm is really the only reason this isn't a one-star review, because I also found the chapters from Adam's friends' POV, the plotline where they're searching for him, incredibly dull. By halfway through, I was skimming them, because of course they were going to find him, and the tale of how they did it wasn't exactly riveting.

Kinda fluffy
This one doesn't go very deep. The heroine finds the hero floating near the shore and hauls him in. He has lost his mistress memory, and as she is being pestered by a suspicious fellow, she claims the hero is her husband. She keeps the hero at arm's length saying they need to get to know each other again, though not in the biblical sense - yet.In the meantime the hero's buddies are trying to find the hero's body. They understood he was killed in an explosion. Once they find him it is time to get him back to London and his responsibilities -- he is a duke after all.But the couple has fallen in love, even though the heroine confessed that they weren't married and told him he whole story. She has led a rather ramshackle life -- her father was a card player. The hero insists they are engaged and has her go to London with him.Well- meaning and not so well-meaning relatives show up, and some attempts are made on the couple's lives.

Great writing, complex characters and non-stop plot twists!
Mary Jo Putney writes beautiful prose, and this first book in her Lost Lords series gives readers a fine example of her power. The characters are, of course, beautiful people, but with complicated and even checkered pasts. The cast is large, which is not unexpected in book 1 of a series, but she keeps her large roster of characters under control, so the reader doesn't have to backtrack to figure out who someone is. Impediments to happiness are many and multi-layered, but love wins out in the end, and readers share vicariously in the joy and the triumph of love over adversity. Putney is on my short list of most favorite authors; read this book and she will become one of yours as well (if she isn't already). I want to devour the entire series, but am pacing myself to make the pleasure last longer. Highly recommended!

Love this book
I am avid (2-3 books a day) reader of Historical Romance. I love the stories that have a mysterious plot. I love Mary Jo Putney, Hannah Howell, Amanda Quick and others in that set.My favorite part of this book was that neither main character was an idiot. He wasn't cruel then unmasked as an injured soul so all should be forgiven and she wasn't some empty headed fool who was spoiled and selfish and did things because she is a women and therefore entitled to do what she wants when she wants (as long as it is for everyone else's own good, of course). He is a good man in a horrible situation and she is a woman in a bad situation. They come together as lovers of course but also as friends. That makes this story so much better for me.As I reread this review it sounds really rambling so I'm going to try to say it a little better...The main characters are really good people that you just can't help but root for. You know they get together at the end you just wish they didn't have to go through so much to get there. The story is well written and believable (not a requirement but nice sometimes). Once I started reading I didn't stop until then end. Now that I've written my review I am going to buy every book in this series...

I liked it - and I usually can't stand insipid romances either
I confess, I was rather surprised by the horrible reviews this book has read, and I'm usually just as critical of bland romances that lack either plot development or character development, but I liked this story. Adam is a different cat from your typical British peer of the realm, and I respected Putney dabbling into the realm of a duke raised in India, and all that entails. Mariah was respectable - not too demure or naive, and I always appreciate when the heroine of the grand romance is 25 or older.Granted, there are some elements introduced at the very end that make the story of "Loving a Lost Lord" a little too convoluted - multiple lost family members are found, backstory introduced for secondary characters (Julia comes to mind) that contributed nothing to this novel, but I'm sure is setting up the plot for a novel later on in this series. Those really didn't contribute anything to the story for me as whole, and in fact even took away some of the focus of the climax of the plot, when hero and heroine overcome all obstacles and end up together. Nonetheless, the first 3/4 of the book were enjoyable for me, and while the last 1/4 made the ending of "Loving a Lost Lord" less than impressive, it definitely intrigued me enough to make me want to read the next book in the series.
