Poised just in the sweet spot between academic (footnotes, references!) and popular (narrative flow, bits to make you laugh), and a must read for anyone who seriously wants to understand how the pub came into existence.

The Local A history of the English Pub by Paul Jenning
An interesting and light-hearted review The Local: A History of the English Pub of The Local Pub. The Book shows how essential The Local is and how it was and still is the centrepiece of Community Life. A good read which will make you want to find a pub that you can call your Local The Local: A History of the English Pub

Informative and accessible
Jennings account of the pub’s role in our social world is very informative, so many interesting social and cultural insights to the pub. Jennings gives the historical context in all its disorderliness and how that has shaped the pub we know today. A good read for anyone interested in pubs, historians and sociologist alike.
