Muscular Christianity: A Case for Spiritual and Physical Fitness

The Church needs YOU to get in shape!
Muscular Christianity is a comprehensive breakdown of masculinity within a Christian moral framework, addressing not only the reasons why both have been in a decline, but what can be done to bring them back stronger than ever. It would be a disservice to label this book as either a fitness book or a philosophy/religious book. Uponi seamlessly meshes the two and hammers home the how and why behind fitness and masculinity for the modern Christian male.Fitness for a Christian is not just a physical matter, but a spiritual one, and each chapter breaks down a different aspect of understanding fitness. From the purpose of fitness and the importance of cherishing your God-given body, to the pitfalls of vice and sin to your life and how exercising should not be done in vain, you will walk away with a full comprehension of the Muscular Christian mindset. Furthermore, Uponi speaks about masculinity itself in a modern and historical context, how the Church has strayed away from the masculine aspects of the Gospel, and common misconceptions and virtues of both. Though aimed primarily at men, the benefits of using sports and fitness for the Church and society at large is well illustrated for both men and women.I would recommend this book for people such as myself who are not content with sedentary life and want to be of service within their church and community. Additionally, for men young and old with an interest in fitness but are looking for a way to focus that drive into something more meaningful: this is a great place to look. The end of the book includes practical advice for working out as a beginner or veteran, based on Uponi’s own experience in physical fitness. I certainly plan on making good use of that gym membership, now with a new mindset.

1 Timothy 4:8
As a certified personal trainer, and 2x state record holding Powerlifter in the WRPF (World Raw Powerlifting Federation), I believe it is important to not only strengthen our physical bodies, but to also fortify our relationship with God. But inversely I believe as Christians it is also as important to develop our fitness as well as building our mental fortitude especially since we live in a world where Christianity is often mocked for it's passivity as well as being viewed as inferior due to ourDr. Paul Uponi draws the the parallels between our physical, mental and spiritual well being in this book with a lot of notes and references from many sources including the Bible to support the idea of the Muscular Christian. I highly recommend this book for Christians who do not participate in or refrain from physical activity so that they can view fitness in a way that supports our Father and does not stumble into vanity. I also recommend this to anyone who participates in Physical activity who are exploring Christianity or even non-believers who view believe us Christians are weak (Yes we are weak that is why we have God to strengthen us.)

Best practical read I've had in a while
"Man shall not live on bread alone, it doesn't have enough protein."I had a great time with this read. The book is constantly walking that line between the physical and the spiritual, encouraging a carefully ordered balance between the two and a holistic view of human flourishing. The highest praise I can give this book would be that it felt like a practical guide for becoming the magnanimous man that Aristotle describes in Book IV of his Nichomachean Ethics. The work integrates the faith with the physical efficiently, and along the way reminds us and encourages us to get to work! The book engages with Aristotle, Plato, Augustine, Aquinas, modern philosphy, every day examples, and engages with each source fairly and thoughtfully.Definitely give it a read.

I wish I had this book when I started going to the gym
No matter whether you're a Christian who lifts or doesn't, this book is essential for making progress both in and out of the gym. It ties together spirituality and physical fitness together perfectly with references from the Bible and other influential texts, along with prominent figures all throughout history. This book is well structured and easy to digest, in addition to covering some difficult and controversial spiritual and physical topics as well. It addresses many aspects of modern fitness culture, both good and bad, and how you can traverse it while glorifying God. There are so few pieces of literature out there that cover Muscular Christianity in such a deep and thoughtful yet concise manner, but this book does just that.

Absolutely wonderful
As a woman who isn't into hitting the gym, this book still was so informative and moving. Not only is Paul great at getting his points across eloquently, but the more I read the less I wanted to put it down. His point about balance being more important than moderation really struck me and changed my entire perspective on moderation. I gained a new understanding of why people, especially Christians, should value their bodies. We are created in His image, all our actions, words and thoughts should glorify Him. Paul encapsulates that perfectly in this book and I couldn't recommend it more. Even if you aren't big into fitness, this is more than worth the read.

Wow!
I had an idea of what the book would entail when I first started reading it, the idea that our bodies are more than meat sacks and our souls are more than ephemeral eternal beings. But I didn't expect the level of depth that I found going into the necessary tie between the body and spirit. Was thoroughly surprised and impressed!

Amazing read!
Lots of valuable insight and perspective in here for men whether or not you consider yourself a gym rat. “Muscular Christianity” is such an interesting concept and as someone who grew up in church the idea of physical fitness is really something I wish was more explored in Christian circles. Absolutely worth the money and then some!

Insightful and Inspiring
Great book. In this book the author goes into great detail on the closely connected relationship between body and spirit and shows how physical fitness can help us to grow in virtue and the value of fitness in a modern age where society has grown increasingly fragile and undisciplined.Highly recommended!
