Brought back Memories
Reading this biography brought back my memories and the enthusiasm of that period to change things for the better. It was an inspiring period for those of us concerned with improving opportunities of everyone in this country. Those who returned from the Peace Corps were students in my classes--highly motivated, eager to participate in community development, and aspiring to public service. Sargent Shriver was a remarkable and talented person who provided a great service to this country and served as a source of inspiration to those of my generation. Reading this biography was a trip down memory lane.

Superb Writing!
What a lovely book about a fasinating gentleman. Mr. Stossel should be commended on his research and ability to show the "true" man. I recommend this book to anyone that might be interested in reading about one of the few good men in politicts that worked tirelessly to improve life for others. It shows that Sargent Shriver was overlooked in his efforts and accomplishments - you'll throughly enjoy this book!

Inspirational Biography
Sarge tells the life story of one of our country's finest but unsung patriots. Having been a Headstart director in the 60's I had heard a lot about Sargent Shriver. I admired how he thought and how he worked with other people. He was an inspiration then, and now reading about the details of his life and all that he accomplished his influence on me is renewed. This is a well written and researched book and reflects the historical politics of the time while telling us how Sarge played into so much of it. I highly recommend it.

Wonderful man, wonderful book . . .
What a delight it is to be reminded of a highly talented, moral, joy-filled public servant who accomplished so much.He was put in both difficult and privileged circumstancesby his Kennedy relationships (a tough, arrogant bunch),buthis own good will and good intentions triumphed. A greatread!

One of the best books ever on Sarge!
This is a truly comprehensive book on Sargent Shriver and all he did to furtherthe careers of John and Robert Kennedy, at his own expense. What a truly wonderful human being he was, and what a great father. He left his children/grandchildren a wonderful legacy!I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Sargent Shriver.

Well written. Fascinating story of a man who would have done so much even without the Kennedy family.

An interesting, if a little depressing read
This book is about Sargent Shriver, the guy who married into the Kennedy clan, ran the Peace Corps, started the Jobs Corps, and "Head Start", waged the "War on Poverty", and stood in as Vice Presidential candidate when Thomas Eagleton was removed from the Democratic ticket. In many ways Shriver was a remarkable man. He, more than anyone, could claim to have had more fingers more "liberal pies" than anyone in the American politics of the 1960s.That said he was also hideously disorganised (getting by on passion, drive and intelligence) than any other subject of a political biography that I've read. When his disorganisation is coupled with shabby treatment at the hands of his in-laws (as an example, Ted Kennedy would only refer to him as "Eunice's husband" in a stump speech to avoid saying his name), his general "niceness," and lack of "political killer instinct," it's probably not surprising he didn't achieve all he could politically. That said, it's a good book, you'll just finish it wondering "What if...?"
