Sukhoi Su-7 and Su17/20/22 Fighter Bomber Family: Famous Russian Aircraft Hardcover – June 15, 2012

The Famous Russian Aircraft series covers a second Sukhoi design, the first being the world beating Su-27 family. The Su-7 was the first Sukhoi design to achieve a worldwide reputation in an era where MiG was synonymous with Soviet fighter.The book is actually two books. The fixed winged Su-7 variants are covered in their entirety first. We have a chapter on design and development, a chapter covering all the various fixed winged variants, a chapter covering the Su-7 in detail, a chapter dealing with the aircraft in Soviet service, a chapter dealing with the aircraft in foreign service, and a chapter covering the various air arms that operated the Su-7. Especially interesting here is the details of Su-7 operations during the "War of Attrition" between Israel and Egypt and during the second Indo-Pakistani War.We then go through the same process with the variable sweep winged Su-17/Su-20/Su-22 variants. Here the outstanding material are Su-17 operations during the Afghan War and during the various Middle Eastern conflicts.There's little to complain about. Throughout the book are dozens of color profiles of aircraft in many, many different color schemes. One could have wished for at least *one* color plan view. There is also at least one two page cutaway and one cockpit drawing that are poorly reproduced. And a few captions confuse the numbering of the Su-17/Su-20/Su-22 wing pylons.And of course this book does not feature any maps and does not have an index.Nonetheless, the good far outweighs the bad. I'm particularly impressed with the amount of color photographs. I feared that, as in the MiG-15 book, black and white would dominate but it appears that the Sukhoi and color photography arrived in the Soviet Union at about the same time.I haven't heard what the subject of the next volume in this series will be. I would vote for the Ilyushin Il-28 "Beagle" which was produced in large numbers, served for many years, and was widely exported. The same could be said for the Mil' Mi-24 "Hind" helicopter. These aircraft also were not covered previously in an Aerofax or Red Star book. I would also like the wartime Yakovlev piston engine fighters covered in this series.Highly recommended. If you have other books in this series you'll want this one also.

Another valid entry to Yefim Gordon’s “Famous Russian Aircraft”. If you are looking for detailed infortmaion about the Su-7 and the Su-17 family, this is the way to go.

It is the most detailed book of Su-7/17/22.

This book is very well done and well illustrated with wonderful color work. Fascinating subject matter and quite detailed. This is a broad treatment of the tactical and strategic aviation.

Another hefty book from the well known Names of Yefim Gordon and Co. Very happy to add this book to my collection fascinating insight into the a/c in its various guises.

Eine weitere "Schwarte" aus Yefim Gordons Schatz an Wissen und Hintergründen über die russische/sowjetische Luftfahrt - und wie gewohnt ein sehr gutes!Ich kenne u. a. das Buch zu MiG-15 und 21 aus dieser Buchserie, und das rund 540-seitige Werk zu Suchois Su-7/-17-Familie passt sich qualitativ (und auch quantitativ) nahezu nahtlos ein. Zwar sind die Bücher rel. kostspielig, gemessen am Inhalt ist der 'Kilopreis' aber gerechtfertigt.In bekannter Manier deckt Yefim Gordon das komplette Sujet zu diesem Flugzeugtyp ab, im Falle der starrflügeligen Su-7 und ihrer Schwenkflügel-Evolution zur Su-17/20/22 ist das Buch allerdings zweigegliedert, und jedem der Typen eine umfassende Werkschau gewidmet.In beiden Fällen reicht das Spektrum von der Entwicklung (von den jeweiligen Prototypen, deren Anfangsproblemen sowie die stetige Weiterentwicklung bis in die Neuzeit) über den Einsatz in der UdSSR und bei anderen Betreibern, Trainer- und Exporttypen bis zu Berichten zu den Erfahrungen und Taktiken in weltweiten Kampfeinsätzen - Stand Anfang 2011.Zusätzlich gibt es massenweise Skizzen und Detailphotos (z. T. farbig), zahlreiche Bilddokumente und Farbprofile und Listen bekannter Maschinen und ihres Verbleibes.Alles in allem ein sehr vollständiges und auch sehr wissenschaftlich-neutral geschriebenes Buch, das versucht eine gewisse Distanz zur Politisierung aus Zeiten des Kalten Krieges zu halten und sich voll und ganz dem Flugzeug, seiner Entwicklung und seinem Einsatz bis in die Neuzeit zu widmen.Zwar sehr speziell, ich gebe dem Buch aber überzeugte 4 Sterne, weil es Top-Material für Historiker und Modellbauer ist. Für 5 Sterne sind dann doch ein paar Tipper zu viel drin, oder wurden beim Lektorat kopierte und nicht vollständig angepasste Bildkommentare übersehen. Leider fehlt - wie bei allen Publikationen der Reihe - ein Stichwortverzeichnis oder eine feinere Gliederung, so dass ein gezieltes Suchen etwas mühsam ist.Insgesamt nicht ganz so spektakulär wie das großartige MiG-21-Buch aus der Reihe, aber sehr ergiebig und empfehlenswert!

There is no need to introduce Yefim Gordon.He has brought so much to Soviet/Russian aviation history,His work is absolutely first class.His books are the best on the subject, very well researched,and very well illustrated by never seen before photographs.A must buy for all aviation enthusiasts.
