Tedious gossip
This book is not for the faint hearted. In many respects a fascinating book, as it details the period of United States history during the life of J. Edgar Hoover little known, and personages during the Cold War and beyond perhaps best forgotten. Statesmen, politicians, spies, actors, actresses, they're all here. Of course, their sexual escapades are there too -- it's the main selling point of this book --not to mention those of Hoover and Tolson. The author uncovers all the dirt in all its salacious glory. There is probably too much information in this book. Every male character is invariably "built like a horse" or described with some such simile, and all the females characters invariably are nymphomaniacs. They all are gay or have some other sexual peccadillo. Was there no one in that period of time whose sexual practices or preferences did not diverge from the mainstream? While the book makes for tawdry and titilating reading, frankly, half-way through the book it all gets a bit tedious and boring. Luckily for the author every single personage mentioned in the book is dead, so there is no possibility of defamation or libel lawsuits. As much as I love to have Hoover's name dragged through the mud where it belongs, the book would have gained more cache if the sources had been named. And even though there is much anecdotal evidence to support the claim that Hoover, was gay and he may have had a life-long affair with Tolson, this is not accepted historical fact. I tend to agree with Roy Cohn that Hoover was incapable of anything what we humans call "feelings." This is much closer to the truth, because including Hoover as a member of the human race by any stretch of the imagination. All this talk of "didn't he" or "didn't she" ultimately gets us nowhere, because the fact remains that he was the director of the FBI for almost fifty years and while in offfice wreaked havoc to the fabric of this country and lay the groundworks for the American Police State, an act continued by Bush and Cheney. Were all the details from Hoover's files? This is the real question. I'm assuming at least some of the material of this book was. If they were, then there is real merit to the book. The way the book reads as is, it is simply a collection of uncorroborated rumor and gossip. Without these references the book cannot be considered a serious historical account.
