Natsume's Book of Friends, Vol. 5

We got to see more of Reiko! And now I’m even more interested. Super good. Less tender moments but lots of laugh out loud moments from Nyanko hehe.

In this volume Natsume has two new friends, Tanuma and Taki, who have limited perceptions of the Yokai world. But it is a means to help relieve his loneliness. I hope he can lower his guard and allow them to become true friends. Natsume always worries about others getting hurt because his ability to see the Yokai spirits. The series gets better and better with each volume.

The delivery was faster than I had expected, and the book was in very good shape. Also, I love this series so much! It was definitely a good volume and I would totally recommend this series to anyone who likes an nice, soft, warm book with an awesome story and characters you can get attached to easily. :)

I really enjoy this series. It sometimes strikes up a sense of nostalgia for me. It deals with being alone because of being different, making friends and friends that understand you. I know this doesn't really review this actual volume, but I don't want to spoil anything.

Natsume's Book of Friends Volume 5 contains chapters 16 to 19 plus Special Episode 4 and extra notes.It is rated T for Teen due to fantasy violence.Natsume is a teenager who can see spirits or yokai as the japanese call them. His grandmother who could also see yokai passed down a strange book to him. Natsume found out that it contained the names of all the yokai his grandmother had fought and won against. He now has the power to control these yokai but having this book makes him a target. Luckily he has Nyanko Sensei! Nyanko Sensei is a yokai who acts as a bodyguard for Natsume in hopes that when Natsume dies, he will get the book. But Natsume wants to return the yokai names to their original owners.This volume starts with a story about a type of mythological creature that we all know. A mermaid. This is the first well known creature to be featured in Natsume's Book of Friends. Natsume goes on a study trip with his friends. The inn owner tells him about how she met a mermaid once, she asked for some of her blood (there's a myth that mermaid blood gives eternal life) so she could give it to her sick friend. She hasn't seen her friend for decades and worries that he actually became immortal. She has been searching for her friend and the mermaid ever since.Also in this volume are the first continuous chapters. Chapters 17 and 18 are linked (normally every chapter in Natsume's Book of Friends is episodic)Natsume bumps into a girl from his school who has been drawing magic circles on the ground. If a yokai steps on one of these circles, she can see them. This girl, Tooru Taki, was cursed by a yokai and was told that the curse will be lifted if she meets that yokai again. But if she doesn't, she and the last 13 people who's names she has said, will be eaten. As always, Natsume, being the kind hearted human he is, offers to help find him. But when he does, his powers are temporarily taken away! He can still see Nyanko Sensei in his cat form but not in his true form. And for the first time, because of this, we see Nyanko Sensei with a sad and lonely expression.Chapter 19 gives us more information on Reiko, Natsume's grandmother. Natsume finds out that his uncle who took him in when none of his other relatives would, met his grandmother when she was young. Natsume and Reiko are more alike than he thought.Kaname Tanuma is back for the special episode "Natsume Observation Log 3"! We haven't seen him for a while. Tanuma is Natsume's friend that can sense and see shadows of yokai. Here he finds out that Nyanko Sensei can talk!I thought volume 4 was my favourite but after reading this volume, I don't know any more! It keeps on getting better!If you are new to Natsume's Book of Friends, it is possible to understand the story by picking up a later volume as it gives a basic overview at the beginning of every chapter but I would recommend reading it from the start so you know about the characters a bit more.
