Vol. 2 of Memories of Fire
Part of a trilogy see the review of the last volume, "Century of Wind". This is an amazing work and a place to discover new territory.

One of the most important works of history in the last 50 years. An absolutely unique way of telling history, a way that humbles the reader.

a potent blend of historical fiction, magical realism and forensic journalism.
I read this trilogy several years ago. I still remember it quite vividly. This is a credit to the writer, as the book was seared onto my memory quite effectively. It is a potent blend of historical fiction, magical realism and forensic journalism. More importantly it does for Latin America what Howard Zinn's "People's History" did for the United States. It offers a different perspective on events that you thought you already knew.In reading this book I personally was forced to challenge my own assumptions and prejudices. Coming to terms with some racist tendencies of my own that I wasn't aware of. (only to later find out I actually have Latin American ancestry myself.)The book is very good on it's own, but it meant to be read as part of the trilogy. The first book is much more entertaining. It exploits the magical realism style to great effect and is a very compelling read. The 2nd and 3rd books while still great works, are more grounded in historical detail. Though they offer a fictional narrative, the story arc in both cases is based on historic facts. Only using fictionalization to spice up what might otherwise be a ledger of atrocities.
