Do these bulbs produce heat? Need for keeping chicken water from freezing in winter, so I need heat similar to regular bulbs. Thanks for any help.

No. You can touch them without burning your hand while on. Very minimal heat production. From a science perspective, the energy you save from using LED lighting is mostly from the lack of heat production. I estimate you would need about 8-9 of them to match the heat of one 60w regular bulb.

If using 12V DC is the tip positive or does it matter?

If its DC its Always polarity sensitive -- usually the center tap is positive and the screw part is negative An LED has a Cathode (-) and an Anode (+) which if reversed wont allow enough current flow to light up. AC power is non polarized with black being hot, white being common, and green being earth ground AC means Alternating Current meaning black and white change polarity in the U.S. at 60 times a second 60hz
