Yes, it will fit. 5/8" is the nut size.I'd also recommend buying a 3 & 5 inch if you are using brush attachments from chemical guys or smaller pads for Moro or in tight spaces. That 6" pad is big, and the makita 9227c is a beast. I use it everyday. Accidents happen easily with that machine. Buy smaller pads, I'm telling you. I have about 35 different pads. They are all important and work different in each situation.

Is this a dual action polisher?

No, this is a rotary buffer. I do not encourage using this on car paint if you are not expert. You will definitely and immediately damage the paint finish.

can this be used as a grinder with a 7" cutoff wheel?

i use this machine for slower speed grinding and polishing. it can likely be used with a cutting wheel, but i prefer the 9565cv for cutting. as it will spin up to 10500rpm vs 3200rpm for the 9227c. i typically use a 6" wheel, but have used a 7" as well, just need to add more hold to maintain control.

First one lasted 25 years

Had my first one for over 25 years. It’s been in commercial use for the past 10 years and after polishing acres of gel coat, she finally after the cord got caught in the rotary head for the 47th time. These things are almost bulletproof and it’s no wonder they’ve had the same design for so long. Buy the flexible backing plate for it for better pad life.

Great polisher

Great polisher, handles very well, speed control is good has the soft start which help control the slurry from flying all over. As with all these right angle drive devices, they are noisy, use ear protection.

more or less exactly what I was looking for

researched variable speed grinders for over 1 year. most variable speed grinder have soda can style grip and only go as low as 3000-4000 rpm... this "grinder"=polisher has rat tail trigger style grip, suicide switch, and goes as low speed as 600 rpm. max rpm is 3200.. I bought this for sanding, so the suicide lock on button is helpful. I planned to take the guard off, this one doesnt even come with a guard. I wanted soft start and rat tail trigger style switch, this has both.. the one part I had overlooked about the soda can style grip grinders that have a paddle switch is they they do not have the suicide lock on switch, which I dont even want usually ..the suicide switch is extremely nice for sanding.. very quiet except at full speed. this is not a rattle trap, extremely smooth and quiet at low end speeds.. soft start is a bit silly when you turn it on and make it rev up to only 600 rpms.. trigger switch is NOT a positive clicky clacky switch like other makitas... is worth noting this polisher does not bog down rpms when you use it
