After reading the reviews on this item I was unsure of the quality. If I hadn't neede it to complete an assignment I probably would not have purchased it. This is one of the coolest tools I have in my collection. It is durable, hold the angle for any drilling tasks I have needed for my projects. This portable drill guide is priceless in my book. Best value for my dollars.

The chuck, the travel rails, and the travel stops are metal. The rest of the construction is plastic. Its heavy duty plastic but this has some effects. The base of my unit for example arrived wit ha warped bottom piece. It still functions because it can be made flat when pressured, but this is not a tool for precision. Otherwise the item works as expected.

I think it deserves 3.5 stars, so I rated it 3 to bring down the listing's 3.7 star average. The holes all had a bunch of flashing that needed to be trimmed before it could be assembled. The depth-stop collar is just a spacer that was threaded radially. The thread cutting process intruded into the collar and had to be filed down to assemble. The molded parts are plastic, but it's glass-filled and should be plenty durable for all the force it doesn't have to resist. It's okay, just very cheaply made and poorly finished. I've purchased other General tools and they were decent quality; however, they failed to maintain that quality here.

I bought this tool even after reading the lackluster reviews. I began a backyard deck project recently and thought this tool would be perfect for getting straight holes, and I reasoned that perhaps the other reviewers were trying to do precision cabinetry or some such that required extreme precision. To be candid, this "Precision Drill Guide" is so flimsy and of such low quality that I cannot imagine any application for it. There is way too much slop in the drill chuck, plus the way all the pieces flex and twist makes it much too imprecise for even general framing work such as my deck. Save your money; you are much better just eyeballing it than using this tool. Hopefully somebody will make a high quality version of this tool that will actually be useful.

For when you don't need or can't use a full blown drill press, this tool does the trick. It is extremely well built. The chuck is of a better quality than that of many of the drills users will attach. Its rotation is so smooth you like to just spin it to watch. Overall a great tool that will last a lifetime for most users.

The base and the articulation points are plastic. They do not hold their positions. The handle that also tightens one of the guide arms stripped immediately. If both guide arms are carefully aligned with the scale (which is positioned where it is difficult to see, they are not parallel. There is no easy way to tell which, if either scale is correct with a t-square or similar. With everything aligned as well as possible and tightened down there is still a sizable amount of slop in the system. The chuck is cheap junk and more easily unscrews from the mandrel than it tightens the drill bit. 2 stars may be too generous. It can be made to work after a fashion, but it's poor quality, imprecise, and not durable.

The concept is basically a good idea , however the overall design needs an overhaul for functionality .

I haven't used the tool yet but I've used microstop countersinks for dimpling aluminum. I was initially disapointed that the base was made out of plastic, however for $31 you have to realize you're not getting a finely machine work of art. I am excited to have this multi-use tool for $31 rather than pay $40+ for used countersinks and be stuck with a one-trick poney. I can see that the frame is "trued-up" with two bolts so it's not going to be a precisly squared tool, but if you need to speed up drilling and want your peice somewhat more consistent than winging it, then I'd say give it a whirl. I have a 3x bucking gun for riveting and might use this to dimple holes on my aluminum row boat in the future. Either way, $31 is much better than having to drive down to the hardware store for a new piece of lumber because you miss-drilled. Btw, I saw someone noted the nuts worked loose. You might try the hardware store for knobs instead of the gnarled bolts. I would give 5 stars if the base was metal, all tensioners were knobs, and the legs joints were steel.

Not very sturdy to flexible generally poor build quality

It arrived very quickly and is a sturdy unit. The angle gauge is quite accurate and I have found it useful for a few projects that were waiting to be done.

Poor quality, housing made of plastic and handle brockets the first time I used it. Not worth the money.
