How good is the self-healing of the mat? I ask because I plan on using it for cutting a lot of cotton fabric for making quilts

It's great! I run a sign shop and we cut on it daily! I've had mine for about 11 months and I'm getting ready to buy 2 more because it's such a durable product. 5 stars!

I have a table that is exactly 4 feet wide. is this mat 48" wide? or is it slightly larger due to "borders" ?

The mat itself...the thick cutting mat...is 48.125" wide. This product comes in two parts: the thick cutting mat and a thin mat that sits under the cutting mat. The thin mat has the measurements in inches on it. That thin mat sits under the thick mat and has a grid on it with a border. The border contains measurements. Length is 0-92", width is 0-44". So you can see from the width difference that the grid is smaller than the cutting mat.

How thick is this mat? And does it lay flat after a while?

It is 1/4" thick and will lay flat once it is rolled out.
