excellent series - except last book
My 13yr old son is an avid reader and loved the last Stroud series that he read, so I bought these for him. He thought the 1st 3 books were brilliant but was really disappointed by the 4th book as apparently it doesn't really fit with the others and is a bit more like a prequel or something. Still would recommend the set as 3 out of 4 were brilliant.

Fantastic stories for teenagers
Bought for my teenage daughter who had read the first of these books previously, she loved the collection and has gone on to read more of the authors series.

Great series for tweens- funny, not scary
Really fun series for kids. Reading level is probably 5 - 7 th grade. Younger kids will enjoy if read to them. There are demons who sometimes eat people but amusing, not scary

A deep pov writer
His descriptions are masterful. Next to Barti himself though, the other characters arent as interesting. I needed to go back for a second read and not skip those, finding interest in them. First read, i just wanted Barti, who is full of it, but not overpowered, arrogant but amusing. This author is masterful at atmosphere, description, and characters. I would do these things differently: The protagonist (other than Bart) wasnt described early enough. For me, i was imagining what he looked like from his behaviour, and the well done dialogue. However after we have already gotten into it and i have imagined it, then the author describes him. I feel i must write descriptions early, and scant, so i have learnt from my experience here! And i learnt (subjective opinion) to make sure i ask for feedback specifically on whether my subplots and side characters are as compelling and interesting as possible, and that they are unskippably linked to the main plot and characters. Adore this author. Absolutely awesome deep pov. The not deep pov narrative sections... only helped to solidify in my mind my love of deep pov.
