Review: Great book! - Whilst the cultural and historical aspects of this type of book are interesting and worthwhile in themselves, i actually buy these primarily because they are such a good read! Brilliantly and beautifully drawn with plot twists and surprising, even shocking moments littered throughout the continuous roller-coaster. I'm 42 with no child-hood attachment to the material, i enjoy and appreciate it as a fresh entity. 'They' just don't make them like this anymore, and perhaps 'they' couldn't if 'they' tried. The crappy film and cartoon (which was my previous awareness of the character) did way more to harm this legacy than help it. I would never have guessed that the original material was of such mind-bending quality. But i think we are all well used to having our beloved comic characters watered down and badly transferred by now ;) And this is the early stuff too, it just gets better and better as this series of books goes on. Love it!! Review: The icons second book - This is the second book in the series of Dick Tracy reprints and shows the serials from 1933 to 1935. This book is definatley a step up from the first book as the drawings and storylines have become sharper. Again like the first book Big boy is the only iconic villian but this time you don't miss them as much as you did in the first book as the other bad guys are quite good. Also the crimes they commit and the way they speak give you a real sense of the 1930s which helps keep you in the Dick Tracy universe. This book sees the character of Junior taking a more promoninent role in the strips which helps to keep the stories going. If you have the first book or even if you haven't this is definatley a must buy.

The American public education system, in tandem with our horrible public life, is no longer capable of producing a Chester Gould. That fact is of no consequence, as no person produced by this culture is capable of appreciating this work.

Not much to say other than when I was a child in the 1940's, Dick tracy was the first comic strip I read. Certainly , ordering this volume was partly motivated by nostalgia but after reading it I appreciated it for what it is and certainly it has appeal for the adult reader. I enjoyed it so much that I subsequently ordered volumes three and nine. I think for the price, I received full entertainment value and will probably order more volumes in the future. Sincerely Ernie Knowles
