Outstanding scanner! But you might need a micro B USB cable...
This is a slick little scanner that works quickly and very well. If you're planning to connect it to your computer via USB you'll need a micro B cable, as it does not include one. Initially I was bummed about this because though I planned to use the scanner with Wifi, when I went to setup the scan-to-network share feature, the scanner's menu informed me I had to set that up from my computer. So I assumed I would have to plug it in and went searching for a cable and for the right software on Brother's web site. Thankfully, you don't actually have to plug it into a computer to set it up and you don't need to download any Brother software either, depending on your use case. You can setup wifi directly from the scanner's touchscreen, then use any web browser from a computer on the same network to access the scanner over Wifi to complete setup of more advanced features without a USB connection. I had to Google the default password for the scanner's web interface (turns out it's printed on a label on the bottom of each scanner), but once I had that I was able to login and configure the various options. Now all I have to do is drop a sheet of paper (or up to 20) directly into the automatic document feeder on the scanner and it automatically performs a duplex scan, skips blank pages, converts it to a PDF and drops it on a network share without pressing a single button. Once it's all setup it is super fast and very easy to use. I highly recommend this. It's worth the extra money to get a true Wifi scanner if you want wireless scanning to network storage.

Swift, Accurate, and User-Friendly: A Must-Have for Professionals On-The-Go!
I purchased the Brother Wireless Document Scanner, ADS-1700W, for my home office and it's proven to be an invaluable asset. Right from the unboxing, the setup was intuitive and straightforward, making it operational within minutes. The scanner boasts fast scan speeds which are crucial when dealing with a heap of documents. The wireless feature is a major plus, allowing me to scan documents directly to my mobile device or cloud storage, making it ideal for on-the-go professionals. The quality of scans is impressive with clear, sharp images and text. I appreciate the touchscreen LCD which simplifies the operation, and the automatic document feeder which can handle 20 pages is a time-saver. The compact design of the scanner is a space-saver, yet it does not compromise on the functionality. I also found the dual paper trays and duplex printing features quite useful for different scanning needs. The scanner has a variety of connectivity options which is great for a modern workspace. The only downside I experienced was the initial connectivity setup with my network, but once that was resolved, it's been smooth sailing. The Brother ADS-1700W is a reliable, efficient, and user-friendly scanner that meets the demands of a busy professional. The price is reasonable considering the features and the brand reputation. I would highly recommend this scanner to anyone in need of a high-quality, convenient scanning solution.

Very nice scanner
It appears to be very well built. Actually pretty heavy for its size. If you had to carry it around every day, like on the road, it might be too heavy. Probably want a wheeled roll around for the scanner and the laptop. But clearly small enough for more intermittent translocation. Had some problems with the feeder. Stop part way thru a 2-4 page document. Just stop in the middle of scanning a page. But it’s very fast. Does double sided scanning about as fast as a printer can churn out multiple copies of the same document. Tried to scan a legal size page and it only scanned the first 11.5 inches. I’m sure there is away around it - just haven’t worked out yet how to do it. Use the Windows scan app and my FixIt PDF app to scan into an app. I still have a 12 year old Brother MFC printer to scan books and magazines and anything that can’t go thru the portable scanner.

OK machine, way subpar software
This machine is ok. I've been using it for over a year. It's fast when scanning 300dpi and handles slightly bent or creased paper well without jamming. The software is terrible. It is bloated and convoluted. It consumes over 1GB of storage. While storage isn't scarce these days, that's a lot of resources for an application that scans documents. I have not been able to get the "scan to PC" to work on multiple Windows machines. The driver installation is either flaky or broken causing the software not to work as designed. There is no scanning capabilities from the web console, one must use the Brother iPrint&Scan software. While the TWAIN drivers do exist, they don't work very well with Adobe Acrobat Pro (that is installed with Creative Cloud), notably no two-sided scanning. The sheet feeder often allows the page(s) to skew, so all of my scans are angled. I had to rig up something to align the pages so this would be reduced. Some downsides with the machine are no Wi-Fi 5GHz, it only supports 2.4GHz WPA2. It won't connected to SMB v3 network shares, so I have to downgrade my network storage devices to support version 1 or 2, exposing my network to known vulnerabilities with these older SMB versions. There is no paper tray to catch output sheets, I had to build something to keep papers from flying out of the machine onto the floor. Sometimes the feeder mechanism allows pages to become misaligned and skewed. Occasionally, the software completely loses track of the scanner. I can reach the IP, but the software can't. I'm ready to toss this scanner. I would not recommend it to anyone. The painful software, the paper feeder system, and lack of output tray is why.

Learning Curve
Device itself is small and compact, which is AWESOME since I love having desk real estate. Clutter is not my friend, hence the reason for a document scanner that has a feeder. Setup: Extremely easy: plug in, turn on, set date/time, connect to WiFi (I went wireless) Software Install: Install all drives and firmware updates The instructions provided: Horrible. Tells you how to plug it in and where the date/time settings are. The rest is up to you! Scanning documents: So this took a little to get used to on the process. Be patient because it's really worth it in the end. Today is day 0, so I haven't setup the process to click an option on the scanner and it sends to to the network or my computer. I went with the trigger from computer. Kind - this allows you to scan Text, Black & White or Color DPI is up to 600 Size - paper size, this has some different settings, but most of my stuff is standard 8.5x11 (letter) Orientation (this is a cool feature) Duplex - I had NO clue what this was, but after testing it scans back and front in one shot. You can pick where to scan it to You can name your file before you start the scan Format: Pick from various options; I'm a PDF kind of guy. You can combine the scans to a single document Image Correction - haven't used, but I have it set on None. Scanning steps (that works for me): Open the app on the computer Place your documents front facing the feed tray Pick your settings on the app Click Scan To scan new documents CLOSE THE APP!! I made this mistake and it was appending it to the previously scanned document. Which brings to light a COOL feature, say you have 500 documents; clearly you can't fit them all on the feed tray so you break it into batches of 25 (20 batches) but it should be all in one document. Scan your 25 documents, put your new 25 documents in the feed tray and scan. This will APPEND to the file. I originally gave it a 4 star ease of use because it took me some time to really figure out how to use it since the instructions are purely out of the box setup. After my trial and error period, if I could give it 30 stars, I really would. This is the best $200 spent on a portable and compact scanner. Happy Scanning!

A very handy tiny scanner.
We got this scanner for the purpose of archiving multiple documents, since out flatbed all-in-one printer/scanner was out of the question for this type of batch scanning (flatbed type scanner). The output of this tiny little thing is just amazing. The two-sided/continuous scan feature is what we use the most, and it delivers flawlessly. Small issues like the lack of not being able to name the output file is of little concern to me - usually I scan directly to a usb key, and then I do transfer everything to our computers where I rename and organize properly. I was even able to make it work with my own system that runs Ubuntu Linux, something that I thought it would be a no-no. I also archived some old photo albums and it did a great work with good picture quality - not stellar, but again this is not a photo scanner to begin with. I was actually amazed that it was able to pull this off, and I don't have to worry that family memories will discolor and fade due to the age of the photographs. A big plus is that it has a very small footprint on our desk. Easy menus and I love the flexibility of the fully customizable presets (eg, preset 1 for b/w single page scanning at 100 dpi, preset 2 for grayscale dual page scanning at 300 dpi, preset 3 with greater brightness and contrast in scanning at 150 dpi etc). Concluding, I am very happy with our purchase and I recommend it for simple home use for archiving.

Pretty good quality scans, but somewhat lacking in features and sturdiness
I wanted to really like this scanner, as I've had great experiences with previous Brother printers and scanners, and on paper the feature set and reviews for this scanner were great. But after playing around with it for a little bit, theres a lot of room for improvement on it. - It's marketed as being portable, but I'm a little worried about moving it around. The top cover does not lock/snap closed, so when moving it around, unless its packed tightly, theres a chance it flips open and gets snapped up. It also does not come with any kind of carry case, which many other portable scanners do. - The paper guides are extremely flimsy, as when flipped open, they do not lock against the top cover. As such, when the auto document feeder feeds paper into the scanner, often times it will slightly wiggle and not feed in straight, causing the scanned pages to be slightly slanted most of the time. Multi-page document scans, the slant also is not consistent across pages, which is slightly annoying. - The top cover, which is opened to use as the platform to hold the paper being fed in, is pretty short. So sheets of letter paper or longer, especially if its folded (like most bills and bank statements are), have a hard time staying on the document feeder and often slip off if not being careful and/or holding it as its feeding in - The documentation for how to use the scanner is really lacking. Trying to use any advanced features, or troubleshoot things like paper jams, I had to rely on support forum posts to figure out how some features worked or how to fix the scanner. - The document feeder is not strong enough to pull in slightly firmer paper. Since it feeds in paper at an angle, firmer things like postcards and some thicker photos cause jams and can't be scanned. This isn't a problem on brother's larger scanners, or scanners that feed straight into the scanner rather than at an angle - The scanner advertises scanning to cloud apps. This is apparently limited to only FTP servers and Email. It does not scan to DropBox or Google Drive. Normal users wouldn't have an FTP server to use. - Setting up scanning to Email requires giving the printer your email password. This isn't ideal for Gmail users since that gives it access to your full account, even if you use App Passwords. More secure printers I've used instead allow linking your account against an app, which allows you to specify which features and info it has access to, and is more easily revokable. - OCR is only available through their scanning app on computers, it is not a feature of the scanner itself. Thus to get OCR PDFs, you have to scan to a computer, you can't use the scan to email/USB/FTP/mobile/etc features. - Some other nice features, like scan rotations, flipfold scanning, etc are only available when scanning to a computer. Email and USB scanning doesn't seem to support those features.

What a delight after setup
I had a devil of a time setting up this scanner. It offers about six ways to control the scanner. For two reasons, I wanted was to scan to a shared folder on the local area network: so, all of our computers could make use of the scanner, and we could operate the scanner while sitting down with it, as it resides in a separate room with other network equipment. So, I wanted to sit down at the scanner, ask it to scan, see that it did so successfully, and then walk to the computer in another room to access the produced pdf file. We use Apple computers and the difficulty in setting up the scanner had to do with setting up a separate, limited account for the scanner, opening up the firewall just enough to let the scanner in, ownership, and file permissions, and more. Particularly difficult was figuring out the correct path name that the scanner would use to find the shared folder. After much searching, I found an example that immediately led to the solution. It took me two days and about 12 hours to get it working. It would have been faster if Brother's documentation or help site showed an example of the folder path for my circumstance. After setup, it has been a beauty. I have used it for a week, and I wonder how I ever got along without a document scanner. It is fast, it is small, and it produces high quality PDF files. If it shows the reliability that my Brother printer and old phone fax machine have demonstrated, I will be very happy.
