Review: Perfect for a Beginner - I've had the finger guide for a little over 2 weeks now. I am a beginner to playing the violin. My finger guide actually arrived after I started learning to play, which is a good thing. I am using a book to learn the basics and determine if playing the violin is something I am interested in (which so far, I am interested in it). I play other instruments, so I know what a C, F, and G (etc.) all sound like. I was doing okay with finger placement without the guide, but once I put it on...oh wow. HUGE difference in ease of playing, as well as the sound. I didn't realize that nearly all of the notes I was playing myself were ever so slightly sharp. This guide has helped me immensely and really helped my understanding of the violin. I could not recommend it enough. For installation of the guide, it could not be any easier. There are instructions that arrive with the guide, and they are clear and concise. No issues installing. For testing purposes, I took the guide back off the violin and tried installing it a few more times, and each time it adhered correctly and as if it was brand new. This is a great product, both in terms of use and manufacturing. I'd highly recommend this to anyone learning to play.

Not as fretless as you think
The idea behind this finger guide is certainly novel, but I found it lacking in some important aspects. First, while it is made of vinyl as the description states, it does not stick to the violin as the included instructions imply, which makes it difficult to put on. I had to stretch it across the fingerboard and wrap its ends around the back of the neck, all while trying to keep it tight so no air bubbles formed and so it would not move. It does a great job sticking to itself, but securing it becomes difficult because your fingers get in the way. I eventually got it secured and tried it out using a Snark tuner. I assume you use it by pressing the string directly over the circles and squares, and doing this I found that the note positions are out of tune, usually slightly sharp. Toward the top of the fingerboard they sound fine while plucking the strings, but measuring them with the meter they're sharp, and they get more off key the further down the fingerboard you go. It is especially noticeable when using the bow. The order of the notes is accurate, but with the positioning being slightly off I question how valuable this thing is as a learning tool. Plus, it is difficult to see at all when you are actually playing the instrument as the thing faces upward toward the ceiling and it's difficult to tell if your fingers are fully on the shapes. I'm using it on an electric violin, so I don't know if that makes any difference with the finger positioning, but if it does vary for different violins, then considering the price I think the tried and true method of strips of blue painters' tape would suffice. Update: After reading over other reviews I decided to follow another reviewer's advice and trim the top of my finger guide. By trimming about 1mm off the top of the guide I got it positioned where the fingering marks are now accurate. Fretless Finger Guides has made it abundantly clear through responses to people's non-five-star reviews that this particular product is absolutely made for violins whose string length from point-of-contact on the nut to point-of-contact on the bridge is 330mm. I measured my violin at 327mm. Since my violin has its bridge mounted on a platform it cannot be adjusted, so I'm stuck at 327mm. But by resizing the guide myself I was able to make it work for my violin. Additionally, if you stretch it very tightly around the neck it stays in place quite well, even without using any kind of cleaner. With a little effort it's quite easy to achieve. I have increased my rating from 3 to 4 stars to reflect the newfound usefulness of this guide, but by Fretless Finger Guides' own admission not all violins are the same, and as such it falls short of 5 stars because it could be improved to include trim marks for violins that are slightly less than 330mm in order to make it more universally applicable. Overall, I am satisfied with this purchase and would recommend it to others as a useful learning tool for first position.

Good product... If you actually know what you were doing
I like to look at one star reviews both before and after I buy a product just so that I know what I'm getting into and I have to say the one star reviews, frankly don't know what the hell they're talking about. I should my violin teacher this when I got it and it already installed it on my violin, she was very interested and ended that she thought that the finger placement was a little odd compared to how she talks but when I played she said she heard no problem in my plane with where the Guide was telling me to put my fingers down, if anything she would correct me when my fingers would actually wander away from the finger placement spots. Regarding how to use: 1. It's made out of vinyl, so you have to stretch it across The fingerboard and overlap it tight enough so that the plastic here's to itself, not so much the fingerboard. The intent of this product is to leave no marks or residue on the fingerboard when you're confident enough to not play with it anymore. 2. Each finger point is labeled with what the note is when The screen is pressed down. As other reviewers have said, it's very difficult to see the label when in the proper plane position but this would be the case with any product of this nature including the fingerboard with the Notes already painted on it! In other words, this product is meant to be memorized fairly quickly and then to act as a reminder for where your fingers go so that you can develop proper muscle memory in your fingers. In other words, you need to memorize what note you produce when you put your finger down on the screen and then after that point this product is meant to remind you hey put index finger here or ring finger here. 3. Though not required, each finger point note is color-coded to work in conjunction with this companies sheet music products which are color-coded. Again not required but probably a very nice touch to help early learners. Since getting this product, I have been a lot more confident and where my fingers need to go and to be honest, I've only had this product on my violin for about three weeks and probably will take it off another three weeks thanks to having memorized where my fingers go. I'll probably hold onto it as a refresher if need be.

Great for those new to strings... Like ME!
I recently obtained a reasonably priced violin since I was interested in the strings. Of course, violins are way different than a piano! To help me learn where the notes are, I purchased this as it was an inexpensive addition to my investment. I had practiced for a week before this product arrived, but since I put it on the instrument I am far more accurate with finger placement. As a college student who's learning strings for the first time, I would certainly recommend this guide. Putting it on is a breeze, and as advertised, it does not stick to the violin. It clings only to itself, so future removal is painless. Edit: After a month of use, I finally decided to break off the training wheels. I still need a little practice now that I don't have a visual aid, but I feel this product was helpful in getting me started. I believe this product still lives up to my 5 star rating, as it; A. Helped me learn the notes and B. Came off with no trouble after a month of service. I would definitely recommend this product.

overkill
This works well enough for me, but isn't perfect. I feel that it is too complex and difficult to read as you are playing. You don't need this much information, and the amount of information on the fingerboard makes it difficult to pick out the information you need as you are playing to correct finger placement in real time. I purchased this because I am beginning on my own, without a teacher. But I probably would have been happier just putting tape on the fingerboard. I do have a music background, but even for someone who is new to reading music and playing an instrument you shouldn't need the hand holding of a tool telling you exactly what note each finger is playing. Tape will help you position your fingers correctly for first position, and a little bit of practice will help you learn what each note is. Mine doesn't have a perfect fit. It's close enough, but I'd be in trouble if I didn't have a decent ear. I installed it right up against the nut as instructed, but on my particular violin it would have been perfect placement if I could have moved it up a hair. (In other words, I know my finger has to be a touch higher on the fingerboard than exact center on each dot. I have verified this with a tuner and my ear.) To a true beginner or someone who can't hear the intonation as well, this could be a big problem. For me it's not a problem at all. (I just know my finger needs to consistently hit a bit off center so I'm not sharp.) My first suggestion would be to have a teacher or luthier or someone like that place tape on your fingerboard. My second suggestion would be to use a really sensitive tuner to help you do that yourself. My third suggestion would be to have a teacher or luthier place one of these on your fingerboard and tell you whether it's accurate for your instrument. Summary: This gets the job done, but is too much information and may not fit your instrument perfectly. You probably don't need this, but if you have it you can probably make it work for you.

A great product for a beginner learning to connect audio and visual
An amazing product for beginners! Not only are they labeled but also color coated to help with visual memory. The thin vinyl sheet was tricky to apply, as you can tell the two marks on the top and bottom are for alignment when installing. It can be tricky to get this on tightly as the vinyl stretches you have to predict how far it will stretch to be super accurate. This is because I am very meticulous, general application for a normal person would take 2-3 mins given they are focused. The product is very useful and tight against the fingerboard, there are no sound impairments or changes from normal use w/o a Fretless Finger Guide. So far it has worked really well. Viewing the actual notes can be difficult when playing due to angle which is why the color is beneficial. One must realize that this product is training wheels for visual auditory synchronizing. That is to say it helps the musician develop a sense of what notes are supposed to sound like, and how the fingers are supposed to feel for a half note in a scale, or when maneuvering, or during a vibrato. Again, I repeat, this is to help get a feel for correct sound and feeling of playing. And it does a wonderful job at that in my honest opinion. For $10 I believe this product price is justified due to increased speed while training, but eventually will become obsolete as one matures their visual auditory connection, or “gets a feel for playing” it is no longer needed. So far I haven’t had it come loose, which is great. The natural varnish coating on the violin actually helps to cement the fretless finger guide in place with some neat physics. It’s analogous to a decal on a window that doesn’t have any adhesive, the reduced surface coarseness provides a surface that is easily stuck to by the vinyl through weak suction, that is exactly what is happening in some small areas with the finger guide. Which is why I think it works so well, and is cemented as it were into place. Below I will include pictures. But for the price and the increased learning I would say this is much justified for any beginner. How else do you know you are at the correct distance? Compared to private lessons this product is beneficial for any beginner for me to take the time to recommend it to you in hopes of helping you further advance in learning the violin. If I were to change one thing about this product, I guess I would make it longer to cover the fingerboard? It’s weak but worth a shot. I don’t have anything else to improve really. The length is perfect as is. So I guess nothing. I will update if need be. -Chris

Great for violin students.
I am an adult who is learning to play a violin for the first time. I never really learned to read music or anything like that, so it is all new to me. I have always wanted to learn to play the violin, so my husband decided to buy me one as a gift. I will be teaching myself via books, videos, etc. so this will be a little difficult. But this fretless finger guide will be a great help. It was very easy to apply to the violin. You do not need to move any strings or anything like that. You remove the guide from the plastic backing and slip it under the strings. It is not sticky, so you do not have to worry about getting it stuck and moving it. It does not stick to the violin itself, but sticks to itself, much like a a window cling. You place it in the right spot and wrap it around the neck and it clings to itself. It is easily removed or movie the position if you have it in the wrong place. I highly recommend this to anyone who is learning the violin.
