Review: Adjustable frequency is a huge feature for use in videos - Like most people, I wanted to set up some strip lighting on a dimmer, and this looked like a perfectly good option. Here's the thing, I also shoot video in the same space. I know how dimmers work with pulse width modulation (PWM), so I just assumed I would have to turn off the strip lighting whenever I shot videos. I didn't even realize it at first, but this unit has a switch to set the frequency at 8KHz, which essentially eliminates any flicker and vertical lines. As for build quality, it's pretty good. The metal housing (aluminum alloy, I think?) isn't super thick, but it feels very sturdy and doesn't flex at all. The PWM frequency switch is tightly stopped, so it's definitely not going to get knocked between positions easily. And the stepless knob travels very smoothly and silently — there's no scratching or grinding. There's not much to be said about performance, it works exactly as advertised. The key thing that makes me happy is being able to run it at a very high frequency to eliminate flicker for the camera. These units usually aren't super expensive anyway, but $15 and some change is a perfectly good price for this dimmer, and well worth it for actually supporting a useful feature that's not always present.
