Notes about Setup
Variable Speed pumps are meant to be run in an unattended mode. That said, one may have to change ones thinking when switching from using a manually controlled pump. So some tips;1. When installing, the pump may sit 2-3 inches lower than your previous pump, 1) I put a 3.5 inch concrete pad under mine so I don't have to bend over as far and 2) used the changeover to install 'Unions' on the intake and exit lines to allow future pump removal if maintenance needed or if you want to bring it inside for the winter.2. The 230v pump only uses the two 'hot' lines of 230V. If you use the standard four-wire 230 wire into the wiring compartment; put the red and black to terminals L1 and L2 (doesn't matter which goes where). Cap any white line and wire the bare copper to the ground terminal. For best operation and safety you MUST run a separate bare wire (#6 size suggested) from the motor housing bonding lug to separate grounding stake. The pump connection must have its own dedicated circuit breaker.3. When starting for the first time you must set the time on the controller. You must be quick (you only have 5 seconds) to respond to get into the time mode. They make it like this so you do not inadvertently mess up the time.4. Next you have to get into the PRIMING mode and run the PRIME step . This gets the water into the pump impellers and need only run for 10 minutes. Once its run once you have to go back and get out of PRIME mode, do so by entering the time of PRIME for 0 (zero) seconds. Fail to do this and you may burnup the pump as it may not have water.5. The pump will them run the default schedule beginning at 8am in the morning (this is why setting the time is so important). The default schedule for speed-1 is 2 hours, speed-2 for 10 hours, speed-3 for 2 hours and speed-4 for 4 hours (total of 20 hours). It will then do nothing for 4 hours which (if time set was correct) by default will be 4 to 8 am, then it will start the schedule all over again.6. You can set a schedule to any other periods and speeds you want but you must set a time period for each of the 4 speeds. Use 0 time for any speed you do not want to run.7. Manual mode - you can select the manual mode and set it as above.Pump runs at a high velocity than previous pumps and is quieter.

Know that it has 2 inch Openings
It's nice, lightweight (relative to my old one), and does what it is supposed to do. The instructions could be clearer on setting the speeds and date/time but manageable. The only thing I did not like was only having a 5 second window to set the date/time. That really isn't long enough and there shouldn't be a time limit on that. Bad programming.Once I installed a new switch nearby and got it plumbed for 2 inch pipe it works really well.

very quiet
On high. you cannot hear this pump unless your right there next to it. I can hear noises from diverter valve, but not much from pump. This pump has the same quality build as name brand pumps costing almost twice as much.
