Yes it is a good product. I have been using probiotics for years. I also like Primal Defence Ultra.

Can these be used as a yogurt starter culture?

I think so yes. They are freeze dried and when you ingest them, your body temperature activates them. Same goes for adding them to a warm (is it 110degrees F?) milk preparation - they should start to eat the sugars and give you yoghurt. I just made my first ever yoghurt using VSL3 probiotics and it worked very well. Intend to do the same with these. You will then save money by keeping your starter going for for future use for as long as you want!
