We bought the same unit for work, marketed by another company, worked so well had to get one for home. It works great "headless" i.e. without a computer, if you copy same size drives, or small to bigger. The usb 3.0 makes a huge difference if you use it for pc tasks.Sturdy, metal body. Holds the 2.5 laptop drives and standard 3.5 drives; and has no problem with ssd to platter or vice versa.Highly recommended.

I have other Vantec products, so after reading reviews for other manufacturers, went with the Vantec as I felt it was the most likely to function as advertised. On my iMac this docking station works perfectly. And even did a 2 terabyte disk duplication that worked flawlessly.

I don't use it much and don't prefer to so maybe that's an indicator that maybe I should have put it to only 2 stars. I have seen a hard drive work in one bay but not the other as well as one drive not recognized by it. It's been a while since I read up on it (I basically stopped using it) but I think one of the other reviewers mentions something about drive formatting(?) being a potential issue.The duplicator's build quality isn't too bad though and it's nice having the eject buttons.

I have used the dock as an external USB 3.0 dock, and have not yet used the duplicator function.The dock function has worked well with good speed and no errors to this point.One function it has provided is through Virtual Box as a USB drive to provide additional space for a virtual machine, since one can attach the dock to the virtual machine and use it more efficiently than a shared drive on a windows host.
