I know these are unfinished but are they treated with anything like insect/moth repellent etc?

I don't know if they treated the dolls. Visually, they look like bare wood.

Where are these made?

According to my simple research, these nesting dolls are made by the good people of The Republic of Belarus. Once ruled by Russia, it is now one of, if not the only, bastion of an authoritarian government in Europe. Economically, they are a little better off than Russia and part of the reason for that just might be the sales of these little nested dolls. (I don't really know that.) Quality of the dolls is top notch and when you find the smallest one, it's so tiny, it makes you smile. Bought them for my daughter.

I actually don’t know, as I haven’t painted them yet. From my knowledge of paints and wood, as long as you have a base layer, you shouldn’t have a problem.
