Another Bangkok: Reflections on the City

I enjoyed the original version of this book, Bangkok Found, when it first came out. This new version, with a new title, preserves much of the content while also taking note of recent developments. When the author came to Thailand, he already had acquired a well-deserved reputation as an expert on northeast Asia, especially Japan. In southeast Asia, however, he was an outsider. That was not a disadvantage, as it allowed him to explore the country--and especially Bangkok--with something of a beginner's mind. These days, after having lived much of the time in Bangkok for more than two decades, he can see things as an insider. This book is a synthesis of both perspectives, as he recounts what he learned in his early days and puts that in perspective based on what he now knows.

A superb knowledgeable description of Bangkok and Thai culture. A must-read for anyone interested in Asia in general. Art culture and history are explored deeply and with many insights.
