Most portrait photographers know how to use their camera. Far fewer know how to direct and pose their subjects to create great images. You can nail the light, dial in the settings, and still walk away with shots that don’t work. Nine times out of ten, the problem isn’t technical; it’s the pose. An awkward hand. A shoulder that juts out. An expression that looks stiff instead of natural. These are fixable problems, and this photography posing guide teaches you how to fix them. The Photographer’s Guide to Posing by Lindsay Adler—one of the world’s top fashion and portrait photographers and a sought-after photography educator—is the most comprehensive posing reference available for portrait photographers. It covers not just what to do, but why it works, so you can adapt in real time rather than memorizing poses that may not suit your subject. What makes this portrait photography book different? Most posing books hand you a catalog of poses to copy. This one teaches you the underlying system. The opening section covers something most posing guides skip entirely: how your camera affects the pose. Lens choice, camera angle, and perspective all change how the body reads in a photograph—and understanding this gives you tools that work no matter who’s in front of your lens. What’s inside: • The 5 most common posing mistakes (poor posture, foreshortening, mergers, poorly posed hands, bad expression) with before/after examples and specific fixes for each • A 10-step posing framework you can apply to any subject and any portrait photography session • Dedicated chapters with guidelines, techniques, and 5 go-to poses for: women, men, couples, curvy subjects, families, boudoir, and maternity • “Train Your Eye” exercises in every chapter — so you develop the real-time judgment to catch posing problems before you press the shutter • A final chapter walking through complete real-world portrait sessions with 5 different subjects, applying the full system from start to finish This book is not for photographers looking for a basic pose-by-pose lookup book without the underlying principles (this teaches the system, not just the moves). This book is for you if: • You shoot portrait photography of any kind — weddings, families, headshots, boudoir, fashion — and want to stop guessing about poses • Your images are technically solid but your subjects don’t look as good as they should • You want to understand why posing techniques work, not just copy from a book of poses The Photographer’s Guide to Posing has consistently been a bestseller since its publication because it gives portrait photographers what they need: the knowledge and tools to make every subject look their best. Review: Great For Starting portrait - i recommend this book for beginners and inexperienced photographers that is starting to shoot portraits Review: The book was damaged - The book itself is great and useful. But it was not properly packed (in thin envelope) which was torn and the book was damaged inside. I wish seller will pay attention to my comment and will package more diligently for the next buyer

Exceptionally detailed but simple to follow
Actually, I hadn’t realized this book was in my cart until it arrived! I have been photographing for a long time and most of my models are professionals so posing never really comes up as an issue. The author, Lindsay Adler, is a photographer based in New York though I have no idea what percentage of her work nowadays is educational and what is commercial. She is without doubt an excellent teacher, as you will know if you have watched any of her YouTube videos. Her work is detailed, methodical and clear and she seems to accomplish almost all of it with just one lens. This book is exceptional with its detailed descriptions, clear advice on things to look for and exercises on training the eye. It is quite remarkable in the depth of detail and is more like an art school photography text in posing than the usual sort of book that gets passed off as teaching in this area. In fact, I know of no other book that can match it. The book covers an extensive range of genres with valuable advice, tips and approaches to capturing memorable portraits over the entire gamut of portraiture most photographers will encounter. Even experienced photographers are likely to find some useful hints between its covers. So don’t be like me and buy it by accident. It is a very valuable purchase with solid utilitarian advice and guidance in a difficult area for amateur models and every day clients. Just one word of advice: don’t get so hung up on getting every little detail right that the client becomes really uncomfortable because that will make for a very bad experience for everyone and do nothing for your reputation. Know your stuff but don’t go overboard. And I note that Lindsay Adler gives almost the same advice in the pages of her tome. Exceptional book - not great, exceptional!

Book of Knowledge You Won't Put Down
I bought this book because I wanted to improve my model posing in 3D rendering using Daz Studio with my 3D models. Lindsay's book, Posing, exceeded my expectations. Lindsay translates years of her experience, skill and knowledge and presents it all in easy to understand concepts with photos showing you what's wrong and what is correct. She doesn't bore you with countless bragging about photo sessions and she doesn't pack her book with fluff and wind. You really get substance and I learned a lot from reading her book. She teaches you how your camera perceives a subject giving options to use focal length and distance from where you stand away from the subject. She teaches you specific posing techniques for women in general and then zeros in curvy women, boudoir, maternity and couples. I founds these parts of the book the best. She teaches you specific posing techniques for men too. She teaches you how to spot weak poses, what make them weak poses and why and shows how to strengthen the pose. Lindsay's book is one of those books that you don't put down but rather you keep reading and absorb the information. After read Lindsay's book I found myself mentally critiquing random pictures on the internet and asking myself could the photographer flattered the subject above what the pose presented in the photo? More importantly I went back looked at all my artwork or renders, the poses I used and saw many pitfalls and mistakes. Lindsay's book has given me new skills and insights that i will now apply in my own artwork and I appreciate that.

Recomendo

An Essential Resource for Every Photographer!
The Photographer’s Guide to Posing by Lindsay Adler is an absolute gem for both beginners and seasoned photographers. This book breaks down posing techniques in a clear and approachable manner, making it easy to understand how to flatter every subject, regardless of their body type or confidence level. What I particularly love is the variety of poses included, accompanied by helpful tips on how to direct subjects effectively. Lindsay’s insights into the psychology of posing really helped me connect with my clients, resulting in more natural and beautiful images. The visual examples are also fantastic, providing a clear reference for each technique. Whether you’re shooting portraits, weddings, or family sessions, this guide is a must-have in your photography toolkit. I’ve already noticed a significant improvement in my work, and I can’t recommend it highly enough!

I wish I had known that before...simply AMAZING guide!
This book is simply AMAZING! It shows what to focus on when posing and taking pictures, what are the common mistakes, what to pay attention to, how to guide your subject to get the best and most natural pictures. On the other hand, as a subject, you can learn how to pose to look your best self even if your amateur "photographer" (AKA husband, wife, friend) doesn't know how to guide you. I would say this book is a MUST for everyone, doesn't matter if you are a professional or amateur photographer/model. It happened to be that my wedding photographer didn't know how to deal with the height difference between my husband and I and this book gives you exact tips on how to tackle it. I can ONLY recommend it to EVERYONE! :)
