Pennington One Step Complete for Dense Shade Areas - Bare Spot Repair Grass Seed Mix - 8.3 lb

Unfortunately, this grass seed did not work great for me. I got it to fill in some thinner spots in my lawn. I loosened up the existing soil and seeded according to directions on package. Kept watered at least daily if not more. The grass came up super fast but unfortunately it did not last even though I continued to water after it was established. The area is shaded more than half of the day. Really wanted it to work but unfortunately it all turned brown about a month after it was tall enough to mow.

I've a few spots under a live oak tree that I couldn't get anything to grow. Bare, compacted dirt. The four pictures are taken from day one to day 12 at about 3 day intervals. I followed the directions on prep and hand watered to make sure I could see the mulch turn dark indicating it was wet enough. I just bought more of this seed to spread over the entire area. This is my go to from now on for shady bare spots.North DFW Texas, growing fine in late September / October. I'll try to update in the spring as it gets hot.

Pennington's "One Step" products are extremely convenient, but you definitely do pay for that convenience. I'd never recommend this to anyone seeding a large section of their lawn, but if you need to spot fill or have a smaller section to do...this stuff is great. It has seed, starter fertilizer, and material in it to help keep the seed moist. I've used it numerous times and it has always worked great for me. For me, the convenience factor is worth paying the higher price for this product.

I have tried a lot of different products to try to grow grass in some spots in my yard and this seems to be the only thing that has worked. It is relatively expensive for the square footage it can cover. I very quickly went through 3 bags for not much of an area. The bag seems big but keep in mind it is not all seed, only a very little bit is actually seed the rest is the mulch and feed. However, that is probably the reason this actually works so well compared to all of the other products. Overall, highly recommended!

Update: our lawn was very neglected when we bought our house on the fall of 17. We have some really tall elm and pine trees. Started using this seed in spring of 18 - 9 bags over the course of the summer. Our yard went from 50% moss (that we killed and raked out). To 90% full grass. It's come in green and full the following spring too. We are now using this seed to try to get that final 10% up to par.This worked really well. Michigan late spring under a giant pine tree. Was growing in less than a week. Watered morning and evening.

Pennington is an American company selling (as far as I can determine American produced seed). I ordered two separate orders of this shade seed, but Amazon botched one order and sent tall fescue. I'll just used that seed some where else. The seed hasn't germinated because of the cold weather we have had. The fiber mulch in the seed mix spread out nicely once it was watered. It would have been perfect coverage for the area that needed reseeding had I received the proper seed mix. Buy American made products, not Chinese.

I bought 2 bags thinking it would cover the bald spots in my yard and yes it has been a tremendous difference. However, You'll probably need a lot more than you think because it works best if you do it thick!

The grass came in great in some spots but not at all in others. I probably will still order it again because of the one step process. I’ll put more down next time.
