Once I figured out why it didn't fit properly, but I had help.
No matter how I tried I could not get the adapter hub to fit onto the shaft in a manner that it wouldn't contact electrical parts (headlight dimmer contacts). In addition, once the Turn Signal Cancelation ring was installed not only did it contact the Headlight Dimmer switch contacts, there wasn't enough of the threaded part of the shaft exposed to actually install the steering wheel and get the nut on the shaft to hold it in place. I contacted Grant Products .com Tech Support. I emailed back and forth with Will Morales, between the two of us we explored the possibilities, nothing seemed to work, and after a week of going back and forth and exploring a much more expensive option of replacing the steering column, I had a thought. It turned out there was nothing wrong with the shaft or the adapter. In fact, it was the Steering Column lock. Turns out the shaft was locked and was holding the shaft itself too low in the column. Once I inserted the ignition key and turned it to unlock the shaft, the whole shaft dropped about an inch and a quarter. Bingo Problem solved. At that point everything went back together as advertised. This only happened because of the positive support from Will Morales at Grant Products Tech Support.

Good fit
Installed grant 338 wheel on '71 vw beetle with this kit and it Worked/fit great. Install took 20 min.

worked great in a non-perfect scenerio.
I was concerned about using this kit to install another brand after-market wheel I had from the '70's. See pic. Made by Superior Performance Products and called "The 500". But i contacted Grant and after a couple of emails back and forth, they gave me dimensions and pictures of the mounting holes with their kit and based on my measurements of my wheel, it looked pretty good. I rolled the dice, ordered the kit and it fit and worked perfect!My old wheel is now happily doing duty with my new, old '65 Beetle.Thanks Grant!

It worked
62 VW Ragtop, the original wheel fit on the shaft splines very tight, replaced it because the plastic was cracked and broken in spots. This adapter fit was actually sloppy but it wouldn't jump splines which was what I was concerned about. As mentioned in other reviews the wheel-to-adapter bolts were very close to the center nut making it difficult to tighten, allan head bolts would have worked better; but once everything was tightened down all was good.
