Snails love alga and will eat most types. They do good helping keep ornamental ponds and aquariums clean.

All died within a week, but produced eggs first, is this normal?

Egg laying is normal, them all dying is not normal. I would get your water tested and make sure nothing weird happened to cause them to perish. Remember, with live stuff like plants and animals they typically do not just die for no reason so we must do some testing and try to find the cause of the issue.
