3.1? Nope... 3.0 YES... 40% + Speed drop.
UPDATE:I was recently contacted by the vendor and out of his own will, he offered a replacement or refund. He acknowledge they had issues in their warehouse where by mistake, they had sent out 3.0 instead of 3.1. Because of this proactive approach to customer service, I have updated to 5 stars. I would buy from them in the future.OLD:I ordered this for my EVO 850 M.2 SSD. The product works. It recognizes my EVO without any issues... the PROBLEM is that the description says "3.1 USB" when in reality its a 3.0. Even the box, says "3.0"... NOT 3.1 as stated. If I would have known beforehand, I never would have ordered a 3.0. In terms of speed, you will be experiencing a 40% + drop while connected to THIS 3.0 enclosure. Read speeds for the EVO 850 is around 317. While connected to my PC, i get around 540-560. I don't recommend UNLESS you REALLY, REALLY, REALLY are looking for a 3.0 enclosure. Keep in mind that 3.0 is up to 5GB per seconds and 3.1 up to 10GB. So your paying the price of 3.1 for a 3.0... I have seen 3.0 enclosures here in amazon for 10 bucks... Keep that in mind.

USB 3.0 so not as listed
I replaced the M.2 2280 SATA 3 256GB SSD in my laptop and decided to buy this enclosure to use it as external drive. Installation was very easy. Only 3 VERY tiny screws. However this enclosure is not USB 3.1. Even the box states that it is only USB 3.0. I confirmed this by plugging into my new laptop that has USB 3.1C. The performance was the same as plugged into my desktop which only has USB 3.0. My desktop has JMicron and Intel USB 3.0 chipsets. Performance was the same regardless. My SSD M.2 is only SATA so I'm still happy with the performance.

Works but do your homework.
No instructions. Not that you really need them, but it would have been nice to know which end to insert the drive through ;-) For reference remove the side with the USB connector. Also, there's a screw in the middle of the PCB which has to be removed, and that has to be put in the location where your M2 Drive is attached to the PCB. My Drive connector had two notches, whereas the receptacle on the PCB was designed for one. Still it fit and worked just fine.

A lifesaver for an IT guy.
My application: Data extraction from laptops that have bit the dust. I'm an IT guy for a Government agency and the new wave of laptops have the m.2 SSDs. Of course my agency has no idea what that means so we don't get troubleshooting tools to do the job. I bought this inexpensive item and it works beautifully. I only gave it four stars for the fact that it is kind of klunky to take apart every time I need to put a new SSD in it. I would gladly pay more for one that I could just slide in without the need for a screwdriver. Otherwise this little baby is great and the speed transfer when hooked up to the USB-C port is outstanding.

Works great!
I wanted to clone my smaller drive, so I plugged the larger drive into this device, cloned the small drive onto my new larger drive using Macrium Reflect, and then I swapped them out.I now use the smaller drive as a backup drive.Caution: Be sure you know which enclosure you are purchasing. SSDs come in different types, and you need to match the pins and type on your drive to those on the enclosure you’re purchasing.

Exactly What I Needed
I decided to upgrade the 128GB M.2 SSD hard drive in a laptop that only had a single m.2 port. I installed the new Crucial 1TB M.2 drive in this enclosure while I cloned the smaller 128GB to the larger drive with Acronis cloning software provided by Crucial. You will have to initialize the new drive first before it can be written to. I then replaced the smaller capacity internal M.2 drive in the laptop with the larger cloned M.2 drive to the and now have room for pictures, music and documents without having to use an external drive aas we had been doing. I installed the smaller 128GB M.2 into this enclosure to store as a back up copy shouls I ever need to restore the laptop in the future.

Good material, it really feels like a quality product.
It could be smaller but it’s ok. In my experience I couldn’t see an improvement in speed comparing to a external hard disk so i guess it is limitation with usb port by itself or maybe this doesn’t support thunderbolt technology.

Do your research before you buy
Make sure you know what type of M.2 drive you are using this for. Will only work for a specific interface. Research this before you buy.
