The People Under the Stairs [Blu-ray]

I watched this when I was a kid and when I saw it I had to buy it! Older but really good movie!

Classic and throw back movie. It is the best movie.

I tend really to prefer obscure or under-appreciated horror movies, but I've no litmus test, and this Wes Craven joint from the early 90s really won me over. It reminds me of the Stephen King movie Silver Bullet in that follows a child (in this case a kid from the ghetto nicknamed Fool by his sister, a Tarot card aficionado) and often has the feel of a kid's movie, and yet svelt full of the sort of hard-edged horror elements and explicit gore than most parents wouldn't want their kids' seeing. But while the mixture failed in the case of SB, it turns this movie into a sort of quirky masterpiece. This next paragraph goes out to all the hardcore movie trivia buffs out there: In order to save his family from eviction and also to get money for a cancer treatment his mother cannot afford, Fool agrees to case out a creepy old funeral home that just happens to be owned by his landlords, a bizarre couple played by Wendy Robie and Everett McGill, who, it can't be coincidence, also worked together on the original Twin Peaks TV series as Nadine and Ed Hurley. The couple, referred to on IMDB simply as "Man" and "Woman", have all sorts of perverse habits that get revealed as the film goes on. I won't give them away except to say that at one point Man is wearing a full leather S&M mask and bodysuit and the person he's chasing is a young and surprisingly svelte Ving Rhames, who just a few years later appeared in Pulp Fiction as a man who is assaulted by two rapist–killers who keep an almost identically clad man kept in captivity, whom they call the Gimp, a sequence so definitive that since then the outfit is almost universally referred to as a "gimp suit". I wouldn't be surprised if both Twin Peaks and Pulp Fiction were both making very intentional references to this movie. This is just a fun piece of film that definitely entertains and, while it doesn't necessarily "make" you think, offers lots of food for thought to those of us who enjoy thinking about the deeper messages of horror films. The guy who played Fool, Brandon Quintin Adams, is just an excellent child actor an I'm dismayed to see that he hasn't had much of a career since this movie. He really ought to have the same sort of cult status among the horror community that others such as Linda Blair and Chloë Grace Moretz have enjoyed.

This DVD is hands down the very best! The quality is good and it works great! The packaging is totally on point and it's a piece of cake to use! I really like that the DVD wasn't scratched and played great with good quality. Overall I give this product two great big thumbs way up and would definitely recommend it!

I can't recommend this movie enough for anyone who likes the genre. The cast all do a phenomenal job. The suspense is glorious. The house itself, with all of its secret passages and spooky areas, is already one of my favorite horror movie locations. The choreography of movements is yet another highlight whenever there's a cat and mouse game between characters. The action and chase scenes are some of the best I've sen from such young performers. The horrible things that the villains do to their adoptive daughter are sickening, but impressively well-acted. The only two things I'd change about this movie are a slightly corny speech that gets made at the end (even if it could be justified as shut providing a distraction for the hero) and the fate of the scene-stealing third character to die. This movie isn't for the faint of heart, but the non faint of heart will love it.

Uncertain what the movie was about, I first saw People Under the Stairs at a dollar theater. I wasn't disappointed. I'm really happy yo have run across this DVD offer. Now, 30ish years later, I can't wait to see it again. While it hasn't yet been delivered, I see little reason to change my rating.

First off thank you Amazon for another quick & quality delivery! 5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Film comes with beautiful slipcover a little over priced but it’s a classic. It’s worth it for this film. Definitely looks great in 4K & it’s remastered HD . Scream factory never disappoints . Lots of extras! This was the first time I had seen it in many, many years which I would have previously viewed it on dvd & I enjoyed it just as much today as I had previously only with a better viewing experience this time around with the increased quality of picture & sound. I have 10 large speaker system offering Dolby Atmos , dts ,dolby true hd etc everything ! With a 55” screen 4k Sony & my older 55” HD also Sony tv which I keep side by side yes I still use it . I like to compare them. Often watch them at the same time for best results . It’s a Very fun movie with a few jump scares some excellent laughs if you enjoy horror humour as I do lol. Arrow Video bring you yet again another flawless release with more goodies than you could hope for. Out of all the Wes Craven's conversations I have this gem is the least talked about. Why? I have no idea but that kind of makes it more special as their is nothing better having a favorite horror film all to yourself. It has got a healthy cult fan base and Arrow were aware of this due to bringing us this fantastic release. What made me want this more was the audio commentary by the lead star Brandon Quintin Adams. Along with many child stars some fade into the back ground and Brandon starred in some of my favorite child hood films back in the day (Moonwalker, The Mighty Ducks, The Sandlot etc) so to hear him speak fondly on the making of this film was great to hear. There is a also a great interview with Wes Craven plus much more to give you its definitive release. Picture quality is top notch and its just a great celebration of a very cool 90's horror film. 5 Stars.
