Prepac Elite 16" Narrow Cabinet in Black

This is a quality cabinet! Utility cabinets in this category aren't usually the most glamorous pieces of furniture, but this is the best quality one I've ever bought. I've had ones from Home Depot and other outlets, including some similar things from Ikea, but this cabinet is made better than any of them. The box it arrives in is hideously heavy... UPS has it listed at 121 lbs and the product description says 126 lbs. Just know that no matter how strong you are, lugging this somewhere without a dolly is going to be difficult to do alone. The parts were well packaged and there was no damage to any of them, but one of the doors arrived with glue all over it. It must have been a manufacturing defect that nobody noticed. I contacted the manufacturer and they are shipping me a new one free of charge. Fast, no-hassle service. Assembly took about 35 minutes with a power drill and I did it alone. The instructions are simple to follow and assembly was easy. You'll need a Phillips head screwdriver, and a hammer to nail the back on. The cabinet is pretty sturdy and I have no worries that it will hold the great deal of items I will be storing in it. Two shelves are adjustable. The doors have 6-way adjustable hinges, which helped me eliminated the gap that originally appeared between the two doors. They will also help you make sure there is a tight seal between the doors and cabinet and so the doors are on straight. I like the metal door handles, which look much nicer than the plastic handles that come with most other utility cabinets. The doors have rounded edges, giving it a less utility-like feel to them. I also ordered the top cabinets for extra storage space. I'm glad I found this cabinet, and at a better price than lesser-quality ones at Home Depot.

I bought this to hide away some taller items in my studio apartment, which doesn't have a closet. I was a little skeptical of the price because this is particle board, but the quality seems to be there. The boards themselves are 5/8" thick and the hardware is sturdy--nearly all metal with some beefy wood dowel pins to help out. Everything came well-packed in foam with no damage. Assembly took about an hour and the instructions are very easy to follow. The only thing the instructions don't tell you is that the horizontal boards can only fit one way, which isn't super obvious until you spend 15 minutes struggling to install them the wrong way like I did, so try rotating them if it seems difficult to fit them into the pegs. Also, this thing is heavy. My UPS guy is a total bro and carried it up 3 flights of stairs to my door, but expect to receive an ~80 pound 6+ foot box and plan accordingly. It's not super difficult to maneuver once assembled although I do wish it had casters. Oh well. Overall, this is great quality for what it is and matches the description perfectly. I'll definitely buy a second one when I can afford it. I didn't need to deal with the manufacturer at all but the quality of the instructions and material on their website make me optimistic about their customer service.

Bad news first -- the factory drilling machine left a fair amount of tear-out on the exposed surfaces. Most of it was able to be covered, but there are a couple of places where the white coating is torn away showing the MDF underneath. Not a big deal to me mostly because I care more about the functionality, but also since in my application they're all up against a wall or behind another piece of furniture -- but something to be aware of if you're concerned about such things. I was able to assemble this cabinet without help, in a fairly confined space. Once the parts were out of the box, they were quite manageable. The holes were perfectly aligned on all the parts, and the instructions were clear, making assembly quite simple. You do have to pay close attention to the drawings on the instructions -- but they were clear enough even for me to follow. A cordless drill/screwdriver will definitely be your friend. The only part that was a bit annoying was trying to nail the back panel in place. I ended up using a staple gun, and that worked perfectly. The hanging space is definitely on the short side -- shirts an pants only, nothing long like dresses or long coats -- but for spare hanging space for my winter pants and shirts, it's great. The shelves are reasonably sized, and the overall cabinet is short enough that the top is also usable for storing larger items. The biggest gripe I have is not the fault of the seller or the product, but the delivery person. They wedged it up under my porch, and with the package weighing in at 120 lbs, it ridiculously difficult for me to maneuver out of the position by myself. When you order this, make sure you have somebody to help you move it -- in its box, it's a beast! All in all, I'm happy with the purchase. It's not an amazing value for money, but it's a reasonable one, imho.

FUNCTIONALITY: This is a wonderful addition to my kitchen. It's just what I needed to increase storage and counter space, and to fill an awkward corner leading to the basement stairs. Now I have a very convenient place for my taller kitchen appliances (blender, ice cream maker) and a permanent, easily accessible location to store my big crock pot. I'm going to cut a 36 x 24 silicone mat to fit across that section of counter and the top of this piece, and that's where my toaster oven and toaster will live! This piece of furniture has allowed me to make huge improvements in my kitchen, and I couldn't be happier about that! PACKAGING: This was VERY thoughtfully packed. Every piece was kept safe, but the overall package was surprisingly streamlined and small. Best of all, the styrofoam inserts were shrink wrapped in plastic!!!! No nightmare snow storm of static cling styro flakes!!! THANK YOU, PREPAC!!! ASSEMBLY: This is another place this item really shines. The directions were a very thorough BOOKLET instead of just a one-page with diagrams and few/no words. However, the directions didn't even NEED to be that thorough, because this piece was so skillfully designed for simplicity and ease of assembly. Once I did a quick layout of all the parts and inventoried them against the list (everything was there and in great condition!), it took hardly any time at all to put together with just a few turns of a screwdriver. All holes were pre-drilled to the perfect diameter and aligned flawlessly. The innovative hardware they provided cut down on labor in a major way while still constructing a sturdy piece. The only thing that gave me pause was the door hinges (I had never installed this type before), but the directions even went into a lot of detail with several diagrams about the hinges, and even about how to adjust them to get the door to lay EXACTLY how you want it to. SUMMARY: For this price, this is a wonderful item. Clean and beautiful finished product. Easy to assemble with only one person. I am SO impressed with PREPAC. Sincerely, other flat pack furniture companies should be TAKING NOTES HERE. PREPAC is going to be the first place I look any time I need flat pack furniture like this again. 6 out of 5 stars!!!
