Split Fiction – PS5 (English Edition)
Split Fiction is Hazelight Studios' latest co-op adventure, following the success of It Takes Two. Directed by Josef Fares, the game offers a unique blend of storytelling and gameplay. What I liked: Engaging Co-op Mechanics: The game requires two players to work together, controlling protagonists Mio and Zoe. Each character has unique abilities that complement the other's, making cooperation essential. Creative Storytelling: The narrative explores themes of creativity and collaboration, as Mio and Zoe navigate through simulations of their own imaginations. The story is both humorous and heartfelt, keeping players invested throughout Visual and Audio Design: The game's art direction is vibrant, with distinct environments reflecting the protagonists' contrasting genres-sci-fi and fantasy. The soundtrack adapts to the changing settings, enhancing the immersive experience. Accessibility Features: Split Fiction includes adjustable difficulty settings and accessibility options, allowing players of varying skill levels to enjoy the game together. Minor downsides: Limited Single-Player Options: The game is designed exclusively for two players, with no single-player mode available. Occasional Technical Issues: I had some minor bugs and glitches, but these do not significantly impact the overall experience. Final thoughts: Split Fiction is a standout title that combines inventive gameplay with a compelling narrative. It's a must-play for fans of cooperative games and storytelling.

An Unforgettable Co-Op Adventure
Having thoroughly enjoyed Hazelight Studios' previous titles like "It Takes Two," I was eager to dive into their latest release, Split Fiction, and it did not disappoint. Pros: Innovative Co-Op Gameplay: The game brilliantly intertwines sci-fi and fantasy elements, offering a fresh perspective on cooperative play. Switching between the contrasting worlds of Mio and Zoe kept the experience engaging and dynamic. Diverse Abilities and Mechanics: Each level introduces unique mechanics and abilities, ensuring that gameplay remains varied and exciting. From riding dragons to engaging in dance battles with monkeys, the creativity knows no bounds. Stunning Visuals and Design: The alternating environments are visually captivating, with meticulous attention to detail that enhances immersion. The seamless blend of fantasy and sci-fi aesthetics is a testament to the developers' dedication. Compelling Narrative: The storyline, centered around two authors trapped within their own narratives, is both unique and thought-provoking. It adds depth to the gameplay, making each challenge feel purposeful. Friend's Pass Feature: The inclusion of a Friend's Pass allows players to invite friends to join the adventure for free, promoting inclusivity and shared experiences. Cons: Steep Learning Curve: Some puzzles and challenges can be quite demanding, requiring patience and collaboration. While this adds to the satisfaction of overcoming obstacles, it might be daunting for some players. Occasional Visual Clutter: During intense sequences, the screen can become visually busy, making it challenging to focus on immediate objectives. However, this is a minor issue in an otherwise stellar design. Conclusion: Split Fiction is a testament to Hazelight Studios' commitment to delivering innovative and immersive co-op experiences. It masterfully combines diverse gameplay mechanics, a captivating narrative, and breathtaking visuals. Whether you're a fan of their previous works or new to their games, this title is a must-play for anyone seeking a memorable cooperative adventure.

Amazing Co-Op adventure
Spectacular experience and quite a ride, although rather than a rollercoaster, this is a whole theme park. With the theme being Sci-Fi Vs Fantasy, you're being taken across varied array of beautiful and colorful set pieces of non-stop action, platforming and environmental puzzles. With gameplay gimmicks constantly switching just as the environment does. Sometimes you're riding dragons, sometimes you're in a high-octane chase sequence... Switching gravity around skyscrapers, transforming into animals, flying in an ironman suit, slinging spells, dodging lasers... You don't have time to be bored. The gameplay, controls, design and direction of the stages. It's masterful work. You can really tell that the developers know what they're doing when crafting couch co-op adventures. If there's anything to complain... The Story and characters are easily the weakest part of the game. It's a story about novice writers literally exploring their underbaked scripts and ideas, but outside of the purposefully bad writing and tropes they encounter, the actual plot and character writing are just marginally better. Nothing exemplifying it more than the antagonist, which is so nonsensical and cartoonishly evil (in addition to being a very thinly veiled allegory on issues with Generative AI,) that it's basically a Saturday morning cartoon from 80's. However, it's not that big of a deal. The star of this game is the actual gameplay, story is for the most part just a vehicle providing opportunity for many diverse set pieces, gameplay ideas and referential jokes (both in terms of narrative tropes, and video game ones.) Sure, it would be amazing if on top of all that amazing level design already in the game, the story would also be a genuine tearjerker... But it doesn't NEED to be it. A little bit of camp is perfectly fine, it does the job well enough, and it isn't distracting from the main focus. The game is not perfect, but honestly, despite those flaws it was one of the most fun experiences I had this whole year. Given... This is a strictly co-op game, so your personal experience may vary depending on who you'll go on the adventure with.
