Undrunk: A Skeptics Guide to AA

I love everything about this book – style as well as wisdom shared. I emphasize style because UNDRUNK captures and conveys what being in AA, especially meetings, feels like. And I say this as someone with longtime continuous recovery who is also a writer/author. UNDRUNK is the perfect gift for anyone who "can't stand" AA, especially those who have only been to a few meetings and then opted out. It's also for those wishing to keep their "memory green."

The sub-title of the book is "A Skeptic's Guide to AA," and certainly that would be me, but I'm much less a skeptic now after reading Adams' take on the organization. The author is intelligent, witty, thoughtful and observant. He also has (as drinkers often do) lots of great stories to tell, both sad and funny, of his alcoholism and his journey from skepticism and a nagging suspicion Alcoholics Anonymous was built on bunk to a new, richer life "undrunk."It's hard to imagine there's anyone in the Western world, what with our drinking culture, who won't be glad to hear what Adams has to say. After all, who hasn't been touched by alcohol abuse? Even those who never touch a drop themselves probably have watched at least one family member or a friend or two go down the tubes from booze.The hardest step, for Adams at least, and probably for any alcoholic, is getting to the first AA meeting. After all, who wants to admit he or she is too weak to break "a habit"? And who wants to join a club of losers? But as Adams soon finds, he has landed among the winners. The real losers never get there.If you don't know much about AA (I didn't) and would like to help someone with a drinking problem, and if you think you can at least get them sober enough to read, then by all means buy this book. It's a great place to start.

I sponsor a couple of gentlemen in AA. I routinely recommend this book. Not just to the guys I sponsor, but anyone curious about the program itself, or genuinely interested in quitting drinking.

If you're out there wondering if you need to hit AA, get to a meeting and check it out in real life. The one thing I dislike about many books about AA is they make it seem as though AA becomes your new addiction; that everything in your life revolves AA. Perhaps for some it does, but for me and a few AA friends, it does not. Don't get me wrong - it's a great story and I'm happy to hear A.J. is getting what he needs. I just wish these types of books would also mention that all you need is 2 drunks and you have an AA meeting.

This is a good book for anyone interested in the AA experience. The writer wrote this after a year of sobriety and "Undrunk" is useful as a short, easy to decipher book giving its readers the basics of the AA program. Not all that in depth but still worth a read, especially I think for those just starting out on the road to sobriety.Recommended for alcoholics and their loved ones.

This book takes all the mystik out of AA and made it so I was not afraid to go. It fills you in on all the lingo and gives details of how a meeting works and what goes on in meetings. It is also nice to follow along with AJ as he works through a year of AA. I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about AA, but is too nervous to make it.

As another dipsomaniac, I really enjoyed his views. I was fortunate to find a fellowship that has kept me sober & straight for 38 yrs. and requirers very little and demands nothing. It's quite an outfit. Also another that helps me love & enjoy the rest of the world and how they see it. How sweet is that ?
