Review: THERE'S NO SAFETY ON THESE GUNS! - Vince Vaughn is JACKED!!!! This performance was so intriguing that you're invested, all in. It's slow to start only because his backstory is significant in regards to his character's "purpose". This movie is a hidden gem. Vince Vaughn is one of my favorite actors. I've always had a crush on him;) The role he played in this ("Bradley") was flawless-- no other actor would do it justice. I loved loved loved seeing him in action-- he's a beast! Prepare to cover your eyes a few times...Expect some scenes to be intensely brutal. Necessarily so. "Bradley" is in a "life or death"/"lose/lose" type of situation. His ability to communicate (verbally and physically) turns his unfavorable situation into a tremendously entertaining hour and a half. There's not a lot of dialogue from "Bradley", however, when he does speak, it is intelligently whitty (as always). I love his "land the plane" responses. He definitely gets his point across. I usually watch movie trailers before picking what to watch. This one had far more depth than the movie trailer portrayed. But, I love Vine Vaughn and that's why I gave it a shot. I can't stop telling people they HAVE TO SEE this. So, EVERYONE -- see this! I apologize for being so verbose...I've NEVER posted a movie review before this. However, it's a bad ass flick that deserves credit. Don Johnson nailed his role, too. He plays this sick f$@k warden and I loved it. Not only is the "Warden" still handsome, but he is a clever, sadistic bad ass. Lastly, it's absutely worth the 5 minutes to give this film 5 stars! Review: Absolutely AWESOME! - Ever since I saw Craig Zahler film, Bone Tomahawk, I couldn't wait to see what his next film project was going to be and here we are with Brawl In Cell Block 99 which absolutely floored me! When I read that Vince Vaughn was going to be in this film, I will admit that I was a bit skeptical but I can see why the director casted V. Vaughn for this film because this film was perfect for Vaughn and you will see why after you finish watching this unique film. The characters, the theme/tone of the film, soundtrack, story, etc really made every minute of this film perfect. Not a single minute was wasted and the film length is perfect too. Please do yourself a favor and ignore all reviews because a lot of the reviews across the internet and desertcart itself will give out any type of detail regarding this film. You can see how I don't give out any shred of detail about the story/plot, names of characters or songs, etc. Just ignore it and watch this film without watching the trailer as well because I am SO glad that I didn't watch any of the trailers until AFTER watching this film because the trailer is spoiler alert. Sadly, too many people will watch the trailer and will already have their minds 85% convinced on this film being good or bad which is a shame. Anyways, once again I will say that after seeing Bone Tomahawk and Brawl In Cell Block 99, I am certainly very much looking forward to S. Craig Zahler next film. Oh, if you own or do not own Bone Tomahawk digitally or physically, don't bother renting this film because you will end up buying (owning) the film immediately after finishing this film. I know I was certainly happy to buy this film digitally rather than renting it because I will be watching this film again in the future.

You just have to see it
This is more of a 3.75 stars, or 7/10. It's a good film that has some issues. That said, Vince Vaughan, who's come a long way from "Swingers," holds his own lol. Here's the deal: it starts out something like American History X introducing some heavy moral dilemmas, then over time evolves into something the likes of which David Lynch might have dreamed up -- something in excess of an individual human tragedy (No Country for Old Men springs to mind by way of comparison). I mean, don't go in expecting any great epiphanies -- it should be evident five minutes in that, whatever else, Vaughan's character isn't much given to critical self-reflection. I like the gritty realism -- it definitely fits in with the understated narrative. Still, there are some odd sequence breaks and some scenes that go on too long or that could have been easily left on the cutting room floor. And the story line is sustained not so much by plot, but by the spectacle of violence. In a word, it's relentless. But don't let that stop you! ;) Another movie that sprang to mind watching this was "Drive." You have here the same reliance on ambiance (that edges toward noir at some points) as the principal medium for portraying character development and for building tensions between characters (i.e. in preference to doing so through dialog). It's a little uneven, sometimes even quite abrupt. But while I can't say that I loved this film, I do think I see what it's about, and I do like what they're trying to achieve.

Vaughn delivers possibly the best performance of his career portraying a man who quite ...
Laconically bad-ass Vince Vaughn? Check. Wanton gore and oh-so satisfying bone-snapping action? Check. Surprisingly human moments blended with campy goodness? Check. This movie is not for the squeamish nor is it for those seeking a cinematic masterpiece, but for my taste this movie fits the bill perfectly. The movie does start off slow but it sets the pieces in motion for a gripping last thirty or so minutes of action. Vaughn delivers possibly the best performance of his career portraying a man who quite literally represents the age old adage, "Talk softly and carry a big stick." The movie makes you laugh, it makes you cry, it makes you turn away in repulsion when our hero snaps a mans arm at the elbow, and I can't get enough.

If you don't like violence on screen
This movie: brutal, intense, mesmerizing. If you don't like violence on screen, don't watch it under any circumstances. From the director of Bone Tomahawk, who mostly relies on ambient sound and slow burn staging. It's really a movie about violence and force and order, and it belongs to a new genre of movies that I can't come up with a name for, about dudes (mostly) in increasingly impossible situations who have to come up with some kind of solution to get out of a maze of obstacles without nothing but their strength and wits. To which I'd add: Jeremy Saulner's Blue Ruin and Green Room, and the recent Good Time. These movies feel like the stoic, talented, but essentially moral antiheroes in the "High Sierra" genre (as there were multiple remakes of it) about outlaws on the run, and also stuff like Point Blank, Charley Varrick, The Outfit, Get Carter, The History of Violence, and the end of Thief where one man takes on a syndicate with nothing to lose. In all these movies, the character does not adapt but simply responds. He is - to use a word my students are familiar with - "serious" instead of rhetorical. And I agree: Vince Vaughn is awesome here and this is the direction I hoped his career would take when he broke out. He's obviously good as a motormouth, but there's a toughness and edge to him because of his size, build, and penetrating eyes. Along with his (underrated) work in True Detective, I'm hoping this is the direction his career takes instead of Owen Wilson goofball comedies. Also, I'm a big fan of late period Don Johnson, who should have a better post Miami Vice career in movies like this. Big thumbs up, though only recommended to those who can stomach it.

Characters aren't novel and the violence seems superfluous, but still different from your usual "brawl" films.
This was an interesting, if slow, film. The plodding plot somewhat mirrors the central character, Bradley Thomas, played by Vince Vaughn. On some level it was difficult for me to fully suspend my disbelief and see Vaughn as an unrivaled fighter. Even looking beyond that, his character feels slightly cartoonish at times. The director goes through great lengths to present a character he intends to be complicated--he engages in unlawful behavior, yet he has a "code" that is patriotic and that never seeks to hurt; he rages when his wife is revealed to be unfaithful, yet he stays with her and supports her even through great personal sacrifice. He's a man meant not to fit into a box, but crafted in such a way that there is a fairly standard box for that too. The violence is surprising at times, and not always particularly meaningful for the plot, but the story is not held back by this. Overall, it picks up after the beginning, and is worth seeing if you are a fan of Vaughn, want to see a more thoughtful action flick, or are a fan of Zahler's work (or the more famous Tarantino).

Crazy Movie But Worth the Watch
You're either going to like this movie or not... It's not really one of those movies that has a grey area. Vince Vaughn's acting is incredible. Yes, his fake southern accent would never win him an Oscar nod, but overall his acting is superb. I went into this movie thinking it was going to be like a prison gang fight type of movie... let's just say there are some prison fights that are SUPER gory (please do not let children watch this movie) but the prison fights are not the main premise of the movie that you would think. I am sorry. I can't say too much without ruining the movie. So if you think this is a prison movie gang type.. it's not. It's a man that goes to prison and has a SERIOUS grudge and vengeance that he pays. Overall great acting with a so-so plot line and gory as all heck. So be warned.

Great flick. Good pace
Great flick. Good pace, believable yet humorously exaggerated. Yes, like the other reviews have pointed out, it can be pretty violent, but I actually think the gore in this film is easier to watch because it's "obviously" fake. Also, it's always good to see Jennifer Carpenter, she's great. Good twists an turns throughout and at the end you kind of end up rooting for some of the violence yourself, only to the extent to which you want to see the bad guys get beat-up. The movie is not predictable, as the story line is dead simple, and the conflicts are imaginative. Notable dialogue. I wish I would have bought this movie instead of renting it because I know I'll be watching it again at some point, much in the same way I enjoy re-watching another movie with similar strengths, They Live. 5 starsโit's memorable and gets the job done, as far as entertainment is concerned.

Amazing cast of actors but could have been better directed or cut.
Was looking forward to watching this movie, mainly due to the outstanding cast, but, other than the very graphic fight scenes it was poorly directed, some scenes went on way too long, like when you watch an A rated movie cut scenes and see why they were cut from the movie, unfortunately this movie would have been very short and all violence if that happened here, lol.

Awesome, but not for the faint of heart
Speaking as a person who is sick of the politics of Hollywood, this film is a new, insightful, original and inspired. Intensely violent in many respects, it maintains its originality even in fight scenes. "Brawl in Cell Block 99" is a hard-luck story of a man's descent in life while he maintains his morals and integrity, despite the pressures of criminal elements all around him who simply will not give him rest. Powerful and provocative. Inspired and inspiring.

An amazing, gritty
An amazing, gritty, unflinching homage to grindhouse films from the 70s. Vince Vaughn is displaying easily his best work. If you like smart, savage criminal thrillers, pick this up.
