101 Watercolor Secrets: Essential Insights and Techniques for Painters

If you will only ever purchase one watercolor book, it should be this one. If you own 100 watercolor books and you do not own this one, you still need to own this one. I read this cover to cover in just two days and have gone back to reference it frequently. This book is both accessible and also chock full of incredible information and also many amazing pictures of the artist’s own work. When I first started learning watercolors a few months ago, I remember seeing all these different names before colors — quinacridone and hansa and cobalt, and one of my favorite sections of this book is the author going through all of these most common elements and what it actually means for how the paints perform. It can be overwhelming to look at a site like Dick Blick and see hundreds of colors for a brand like Daniel Smith but this book is what helped me understand the colors and the pigments I am choosing and how I can expect them to perform. I also love that she shares her own favorite colors from a variety of brands (Daniel Smith, QOR, Windsor and Newton), and I’ve used those recommendations to fill out parts of my own palette. Additionally she provides links to online videos she’s made that give further details about the various painting techniques she outlines in the book. I found it especially helpful in better understanding the charging method (though I still have a ways to go before I fully get the hang of it!) Even if you aren’t as interested in painting flowers and birds like the author, this book is a must own for anyone interested in watercolors. I genuinely cannot recommend this book enough!

With over 100 art books collected over decades, it is rare for me to purchase another book. It must be different and unique. In fact, recently I culled about two dozen from my shelves. Amazon’s generous sample impressed me so much I ordered it immediately. Anna’s phenomenal book greatly exceeded my expectations. In fact, it will replace many other books which I have accumulated. This is an unbelievably comprehensive reference, with outstanding photography and instruction. It would not be surprising to me if this sold out shortly. It is worth much more than the price. (And as you know, artists are frugal people.) Anna’s presence is palpable; I can hear her soothing voice and lovely diction as I read. This is not a “me too” book, rehashing the same beginner information that has been written extensively in many volumes over the years. That said, it is best appreciated by watercolorists with some experience. The thick quality of the paper and the cover was immediately noted. So often, one purchases a book to be disappointed in the flimsy paper, short length, and lack of quality content. This is exceptionally well written, spaced and organized. It must have taken years of work to produce something of this quality. The all inclusive index is wonderful, as books without an index are a pet peeve of mine. The font is easy to read. What is most impressive to me is the fact that there is actually new information not contained in other books. A wonderful description of the color families (such as cobalts, quinacridones, etc.) and sedimentation are a few examples. The words flow together so harmoniously and beautifully I often found myself “sneaking” in reading bits whenever I had a moment. This is the first time I would describe an art instruction book as a “page turner”! In addition to illustrations, links to the videos complete the instruction. It is clear that much thought, planning and detail went into creating this masterpiece. “101 Watercolor Secrets” is an impressive achievement for the prodigiously talented, multilingual Anna.

After only 5 pages, the content has paid for itself. This is the book that demystifies seemingly elusive watercolor qualities into a workable format. The author not only gives concise explanations but provides specific uses and preferences. Easy to understand concepts with author's writing and painting style. The book also is extremely high quality with vibrant and crisp color printing. Easy on the eyes font. The paper is glossy and thick. The front cover has an extra fold for a bookmark if inclined. Pleasure to read. Love this book! MUST READ watercolor book - every level.

I’ve followed Anna on YouTube for years & admire her talent immensely. She has a distinct technique, giving particular attention to precision and detail. Her distinct use of vibrant yet understated color sets her work apart from other artists. Her voice evokes a feeling of warm comfort, making her one of my favorite instructors on the platform. And when I saw she wrote a book I immediately knew I needed it. I couldn’t wait for the physical release so I got the kindle edition in October 2024. I’m so impressed that I’ll probably buy a copy of the physical book once it’s released, but the kindle version is fantastic as far as layout/graphics/readability. This book is unique among watercolor education/tutorial texts. There are tutorials, but Anna takes the time to go in-depth and fully explain what, how, and why. There are tutorials, but this book is so much more. It’s an in-depth, engaging, perspicuous manual for anyone who wants to paint with watercolors. Her first chapter - “Decoding Pigment Labels,” is something I’ve not seen in any other watercolor instruction book. The first three chapters are dedicated to color and building your signature palette. I wish I had this book years ago when I first began dabbling in watercolor! Anna definitely has a signature palette, and I love that she encourages the reader to choose their own preferred pigments with confidence gained from her lessons in color theory. Anna then discusses tools and techniques…you wouldn’t think these would be all too exciting as they’re standard in almost all tutorial books, but Anna takes everything you know one step further. For example, I’m not comfortable with hot press paper, and I only have a couple books that even talk about the use of hot press, but Anna covers it in her book (why artists use it, how it differs from cold press in practice, and how to avoid common mistakes when first using). The first “tutorials” begin in Chapter 6. They’re generally simpler subjects with few pigments, structured around one or two techniques. Each project builds upon the last, with special attention given to nuance in different subjects (ie feathers, petals, fur, or eyes). Chapter 7 anticipates challenges many artists may face as they progress and gives strategies to avoid or overcome them. Chapters 8-10 include lessons on how to create your own composition, Anna’s own personal favorite tips & tricks, and advice for moving forward in your watercolor journey. This book is amazing, simply put. Anna has a gift, not only as an artist, but as a teacher. Her complete understanding of and passion for watercolor is evident in the way this book was written. This is not a quick read, and it’s not just a reference. I found myself immersed in it, excited to turn the page, finding gems of insight scattered all throughout. I read the entire book before starting the first tutorial, but I didn’t feel like I had to. I just wanted to. Anna includes many of her own beautiful paintings as examples. Tutorials are methodical and reiterate WHY, not just how, particular pigments, techniques, or tools are used. And there are QR codes at the end of many chapters/sections which take you to a video of Anna demonstrating various techniques. Watercolor is a challenging medium; the combination of well-written lessons accompanied by video demonstrations made me feel like I was fully equipped and capable of advancing in my art. I can’t say enough good things about this book. It is 535 pages (on kindle, and I assume the physical version will be the same). It feels like a long book…not because it’s a slog (it’s not), but because there is SO MUCH valuable material. If you are remotely interested in watercolor, and if you’re anything but advanced in the subject, this is a no-brainer - you need this book.

The author, Anne Buccerelli, is an amazing botanical artist and skillful teacher. I ordered this book after spending several hours a day for two weeks watching Anna Bucciarelli's subscription Patreon watercolor tutorials. But, I had drawn a blank trying to remember how confusing watercolor names and families and did not waste my time and money on equipment and paint I may not need. Ms. Buccerelli is mindful of tight budgets in both her tutorials and in her book. 101 Watercolor Secrets is a heavy, well made paperback book, with 250+ pages of useful information and gorgeous illustrations for beginners and more advanced watercolor artists. Just take a look at the Table of Content I included with this review. It is worth every penny.

I follow this artist on YouTube, and her knowledge and skills are amazing, so I was thrilled to purchase her book. It includes a vast collection of comprehensive and clearly explained information, advice, and techniques for choosing and using watercolors. The art illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. Anna has helped me understand the behaviors of watercolors based on the combination of different types and brands of watercolor paints, types of watercolor paper, and controlling the amounts of water applied. She teaches important painting techniques, and lists her favorite colors and brands, which is helping me build a lovely color palette. Her skill level is beyond even my loftiest goals; however, I appreciate the challenge of learning from someone whose style I hope to someday emulate. I am enjoying building my skills with this book and her teaching videos. Not to mention she has such a sweet and calming voice and personality!

I borrowed this book from the library, twice, as soon as it came out but it’s so good I had to buy my own copy. It will be a reference book for years to come! It’s the best watercolor instruction book I have read! (And I’ve read many, even many very good ones.) I’m going to guess that the editors or publisher recommended and chose the title. There are not 101 “secrets”. Much of the lessons and instructions are common watercolor techniques and advice found in other books, but page by page the insights into understanding and learning watercolor (and I was already fairly experienced) are expertly, skillfully and systematically very well laid out, rich and full of detailed instructions, but very easy to read and understand with generous and very helpful photos of the artist’s work. It’s like an encyclopedia of watercolor almost. It’s just superb! To be sure, there are actually some of the artist’s secrets, kindly and generously given, for instance, my favorite—Anna’s use of Green Apatite Genuine pigment from Daniel Smith to create beautiful granulating leaves in her botanical paintings. Or her use of an iPad glove to keep from causing issues on her paper as she paints. Anna’s paintings are stunning and beautiful and she is so generous and kind to share how she has created them! There are links throughout the book for those who have purchased the book to watch very many instructional watercolor demonstrations of Anna’s paintings. The videos are of a level that many artists require a subscription. And I’ll add that Anna has a very modest, humble and gracious spirit!

Ce livre d’aquarelle est magnifique ! Cette artiste est absolument incroyable. Elle a un talent fou. Et même si le fait qu’il soit en anglais ne me facilite pas la compréhension, je suis absolument heureuse de l’avoir acheté. Les conseils sont excellents et bien expliqués, les couleurs et ses mélanges détaillés. Un livre à posséder absolument, même si je sais que jamais je n’atteindrai le 10° de son niveau.

Es una delicia de libro. Unas ilustraciones preciosas, explicaciones interesantes y maquetado impecable. Si ya pintas, este libro ayuda a dar un repaso a ciertos conocimientos que se escapan, a identificar fácilmente detalles de los pigmentos y a aprender mas acerca de los materiales. Sirve tambien de guia ilustrativa y curso, ya que en la mayoria de los puntos del indice tiene link a una web con videos tutoriales de sus pinturas. Si acabas de empezar, es muy bueno tenerlo ya que te aclara todo y te ahorra muchas horas de busqueda online y dinero en probar materiales (es cierto que luego cada uno usa lo que le apetece y se puede permitir, pero tiene buenas recomendaciones). Estoy contenta con la compra, ojala haberlo tenido hace unos años cuando empecé a pintar con acuarela. Es bastante completo. En cuanto al empaquetado, compre la edicion nueva, no de segunda mano, pero el paquete deja que desear. Sobre de carton de amazon reutilizado, pegado mal con celo, el libro sin ninguna protección contra golpes o humedad. El transportista eso si, muy agil y atento.

Absolut zu empfehlen! Endlich mal ein Buch, wo auch detaillierter auf Pigmente und ihre Eigenschaften sowie Lichtechtheit eingegangen wird, mit Pigmentnummern (da sollten sich mehr Künstler ein Beispiel nehmen für ihr Buch, da nur ein Name einer Farbe nicht bei jeder Marke gleich heißt oder das gleiche Pigment ist. Die Pigmentnummer sagt da mehr aus, auch wenn es da auch Unterschiede in der Optik geben kann, je nachdem wie ein Pigment verarbeitet wurde). Schöne farbenfrohe Motive, verschiedene Techniken, Komposation eines Bildes, Tips wie man die eignen Werke digitalisiert, Quellenangaben für Lizenz freie Referenz Photos, Licht & Schatten, Pinsel, Papier, x-Ray Technik, ein wenig von Folk Art etc. Ein sehr interessantes Buch mit Infos, die man nur in wenigen Büchern so findet.

I am so glad I chose this book. It is absolutely INCREDIBLE. There are over 250 pages crammed with beautiful illustrations and the most fantastic watercolour tips and secrets. It is perfect for me as it starts off with the technical side of colour pigments—something I have become more interested on as I progress along my watercolour path. I was put off watercolour 25 years ago by the dullest, most useless watercolour teacher at a local class, who taught us absolutely nothing about the subject. That resulted in me not understanding how watercolour behaves and lots of frustration. This year, I have focused on learning all about this beautiful medium from great people on YouTube. That is how I discovered this incredible artist. If you want to learn more about the intricacies of watercolour, how the paint behaves, how to layer and glaze and much, much more, this book is probably the best you will find. There are many watercolour books out there and to be honest, they are quite dull and don’t offer anything like this one. They certainly don’t explain how to get these results. She is an incredible artist and I love her YouTube videos. She has put her heart and soul into this amazing book and if you want to push yourself and improve your art, I highly recommend it.
