Great idea , hard to figure out why they don't shut off, 1 of 4 does, three seem to be leaking!

I've been using the floats in my cattle troughs for about two months and so far all is good. Update about a year later. Two out of three floats started overflowing, so I removed them, cleaned and one went back to working like it should, but the other is still overflowing. The come apart easy and clean in vinegar, so not hard to clean, just not sure why the one isn't working correctly. I will probably purchase again and give the next set a try to see if they do better. Update a few months later: More of them are leaking and need cleaning again and again some seal and some don't. I've moved away from these type of floats and went to the more expensive type that are all brass and reside outside of the water and use a float and rod to control the water level. These floats would probably work well in a cleaner environment, but for cattle troughs I think the brass external floats work better or at least less maintenance.

First the box on one of the float valves was damaged. It must have been damaged during packaging because the other two float valve boxes were not damaged. The box the trio came in was not damaged, and the Amazon box my total order came in was not damaged. I decided to hook up the float valve in the damaged box first. I used the metal elbow and 3/4” metal adapter supplied. I hooked up the metal elbow to the float valve, then hooked up the adapter to the male threaded end of the 1/2” metal elbow, then screwed the metal adapter into a threaded 3/4” pvc coupling. I used the tape supplied with the float valve on all the male threaded fittings. After everything was set I turn on the water but only about 1/3 of a turn. This was a 3/4” pvc ball valve. Immediately the valve began to leak at the metal fittings and the float valve did not shut off the water once it reached the float valve and it continued to leak heavily and it didn’t take long for the float valve to be completely submerged. I turned off the water. Heavily wrapped the metal male ends of the system and put everything back together. The valve continued to leak. I then ditched that float valve and put together a second float valve and did not use the metal fittings. I bought a 3/4” pvc elbow with a male threaded end and a smooth bore on the other end. I taped up and screwed the elbow’s threaded end to the pvc coupling; then connected a 3/4” adapter with a 1/2” female connector allowing the float valve to the 1/2” threaded inlet on the valve. So far so good. No leaks on the fittings and the float valve itself about halfway into the water. After 3 hours the water level didn’t change. But, the next morning the water was over flowing so the float valve failed. So now I turn on the water, feed all the animals, then walk back and cut the waiter off. So…based on these issues I would not recommend the product.

Works great, easy installation, made well. I have used Little Giant trough floats for years for the same reasons. Easy installation, reasonable price. They always worked till recently. But out of the last dozen Little giants I bought, 2 went in and worked, and they did not last very long before they started to overflow the troughs without shutting off. I put these new floats in several months ago and they all still work perfectly.

Works as desired, but leaks significantly at the hose connect, even with joint tape.

These have worked perfect! During the heat of summer in the South my cows water troughs have been kept full. No worries on water. Easy install makes these perfect for any water trough.
